Mossberg 144 vs Remington 513T which would you pick and why?

In the past few days crusing around some of the gun shops I have come across these two rifles. both are heavy barrel target .22's and both have front and rear sights. The Remington has Redfield sights and the Mossberg sights just have mossberg on them but I think they may be Lyman. The wood on the Mossberg is in better shape but the bluing on the Remington is better. Both are in good to very good condition. Both are priced within $25 of each other.

So any reason I should pick one over the other?

Tough choice! You could easily have two worse rifles to have to choose from;)

the Mossberg sights just have mossberg on them but I think they may be Lyman.
You are probably looking at the 144LSB version (the 'B' version has a Mossberg sight that is pretty much a copy of the Lyman). Its a very good sight.

I have a 144LSB and can't say anything but good about it.
The Remington might have more resale value down the road for brand recognition and especially if its "U.S. Property" marked.
The 144 will be a lot newer than the Remington, but I doubt that anyone other than a serious smallbore competitor is going to wear out a rimfire in their lifetimes.

I have yet to purchase any .22's that have been of better quality and reliability than my older Remingtons (and I have had Anschutz).

I have handled both rifles, own a M513T.

The remington is better built, in my opinion.

For collector value, get the one stamped "US Property".

Anything coming out of US inventory will command a premium.

That 144 will do. I have seen them in prone .22 competitions. Granted, the one I have has redfield olympic sights on it instead of the lyman, but both are good sights. The redfield sights are worth more, if you can even find them in good shape anymore. I can't say I have shot the remington. I haven't even seen one. The 144 I have shot is on par with the winchester 52d that is also in the family. The 144 also has a military background I believe. I think both the 144 and the 44us(a) were used as training rifles by the army.

I had a US44 that had a problem with the fireing pin. It was hard to find parts for but that was before Al Gore invented the internet. BTW where's that global warming. It's way too cold here in Minn.
