Hi, all -

I'm new to revolvers but have successfully built a custom 1911. Can anyone tell me how difficult/advisable it would be to change barrels (and consequently barrel lengths) on a pinned model 29? I may be getting a 6" Model 29 and can buy an 8 3/8" and/or a silhouette barrel. Is this a workable idea or should I simply purchase another revolver in the desired length?

Removing the barrel is not a great problem. You should have an action wrench so that you don't twist the frame when removing the barrel. Some say to just stick a piece of wood thru the action and twist the barrel off, but an action wrench will keep you from possibly tweeking the frame. The problem with the new barrel is that it will most likely not index correctly and you will have to turn down the shoulder of the barrel. Brownells makes a hand tool for doing this or you can use a lathe. Next the rear of the barrel will need to be shortned for the proper cylinder to barrel gap. The last thing that may need to be done is to cut the forceing cone deeper ( again, more tools from Brownells ). All in all it would be better to buy a second gun. The purchase price of the tools needed would not be worth the price for just one revolver.
