I just inherited a Colt Official 6" 38Spl. with a serial number of 504##(five number serial number) is there any way to tell how old this gun is by the serial number? The cyl. over-travels I think it is the bolt and spring, does anyone know where I can find a replacement bolt?
Thanks.

You can track the serial number/year of manufacture at: www.proofhouse.com

You might find a cylinder bolt at: www.e-gunparts.com

However they have to be hand fitted by a gunsmith that is experienced with these model Colt's - and they are few and far between. Consider calling the Colt factory and see what their Customer Service Dept. might have to say.

If you posted the right serial number you will find it listed under Army Special, that preceeded the Official Police. All Colt did was change the name because the Army was no longer interested in .38 revolvers, but plenty of sales were being made to law enforcement.

According to the number it was made during 1924.

Wow. Thanks very much. It has a 6" barrel that is stamped "Heavy Barrel" "Colt Official Police" The gun is 90% blue, and except for the over-spin, it is in great shape. I will give Colt a call. I'm not going to sell the gun, it was my uncle's, I have 42 guns. But I wonder how much a gun like this goes for, I'm guessing around $400 or so.
