I recently bought a CRKT M-16 4" Tanto with a zytel handle. I've had it for about a week and noticed what looks like rust spots on the blade and on the metal exposed through the holes in the handle. Has anyone had this happen to them? What will remove it? or should I send it back?
Thanks guys

Bead blasting (the process which gives the M16 knife its mat-grey colour) is notorious for developing rust spots.
It shouldn't happen if the knife is oiled and cleaned on a regular basis when it is exposed to water or a particularly humid atmosphere.
If it is rust, and it won’t wipe off with a well-oiled cloth, you could email CRKT and see if they will replace the knife for you.
Also, try posting your question on:

As they are far more knowledgeable about knives than myself.

The thing that I can't understand is how it has rust on it already. I've had it for a week, and it's not particularly humid around here. I called CRKT today and they said to use some WD-40. I tried a little Breakfree and it didn't work but I'm sure it's not meant for that. I wonder if a little light steel wool would work, or if it would damage the finish.
I'll check out bladeforums to.
Thanks

All my CRKTs are like that. Many of them were even wiped down with CLP. For example, I wiped one down with CLP, wiped off the excess, let it sit in a drawer for a week, and then it had rust spots. I'll probably never buy any more CRKTs, and the ones I have, I will probably abuse

Hmmmm, not good at all. I've only ever heard good things about CRKT knives. I love the design of the M-16 series, and the blade is almost sharp enough to shave with. I guess I'll just have to take good care of it. My other knife (camillus lev-r-lok) I've had for several years and not a spot on it.

Thrash1982 :
A lot of crkt's will get surface rust almost immediately from carrying them.
I've seen others that I have sharpened with the same surrface rust just from being in the pocket.
I keep all my knives with a light coat of oil on them. It serves two purposes.
It keeps the surface rust as bay and if I hand the knife ot someone to look at, they invariably puttheir hands all over the blade. After they have handled it, I can then wipe the knife blade down again and the prints are gone.
Re-oil it after I get home that night.

Odd, I've never had that problem with a CRKT in the years I've been using them.

I've seen three CRKT's come across the stones for sharpening that had surface rust. The one I carried briefly had the same thing happen to it, nothing major, just a PITA sometimes.
