I just didn't want to hurt gun, paperwork says not to shoot hp loads.
I guess because it has a 5 shot cylinder. My son just started reloading and would like to work up something maybe for practice on paper. I didn't have a specific bullet wheight in mind , thought i would get some reccomendations, thanks a lot of info here.

Try 2.7 to 3 gr of Bullseye and a 125 to 158gr lead bullet. Whatever style you like the look of. Get them sized .358 and you will be happy. Classic 38 spl load.

paperwork says not to shoot hp loads. Can't understand that at all.
Standard pressure .38 Special loads are all the same SAAMI standard, whether lead or JHP bullets are used.
You can shoot any bullet type you want to without harming a gun as long as you use standard pressure .38 Special data for that bullet.

perhaps "hp" in this instance means "high pressure" ....loads.
my 2 cent guess. ;)

Well, that sounds reasonable.
I got off on the JHP thing from reading all the lead bullet advice in the other posts.
High Pressure sounds more like it, but why didn't they just say no +P?
Maybe it's older then 1974, when they invented +P?
Oh well!

Thanks, i will try and find the paper work that came with the gun.
I mainly didn't want to overpower it, i was told standard loads were fine.
Handloads are new so was just looking for a starting point on the low side.
I've also heard how easy it is to get a sqibb load in fhese do to case capacity.
So had a few thing to think about.

get a loading book....but for practice, a 158 SWC with unique or universal clays works well, recoils lightly, and is usually fairly accurate

Try 2.7 gr. of Bullseye under a 148 BBWC. Very mild. Or the same powder charge with a 158 SWC. Both these loads shoot well in my little Rossi. It's an older model but sounds the same as yours. Two inch bbl, five shot.
Nothing is likely to make this little shooter a tack driver, but they are fun for tin cans at 7 yards. I used to carry mine on my belt when out on my ATV, loaded with a couple rounds of #8 shot in the Speer capsules for snake medicine. Worked a treat on the single rattler I popped with it. The Speer capsules make pie sized pattern at about 6-7 ft from the two inch tube.
