What the heck is this thing in front of the 1911 barrel?

I see this a lot on new production 1911s. What the heck is the stainless part extending from the slide? Not just the barrel, but the stuff around it. It wasn't there on the original 1911....

Ya...ok.
If your'e serious... its a barrel bushing. It keeps the barrel in alignment during firing and gives it a tight yet slippery place to move inside of during the cycling of the slide. When the wear out...you just get a new one.
If your not serious.....its a small metallic ham sandwich. Hold the mayo as it rusts the barrel. :D
Shoot well

It's the standard 1911 barrel bushing. It might look unusual since it's stainless on a blued slide.

Ok, do new 1911's just come with one extended outside of the slide? Because as you can see here, you can't really see it on a classical 1911.

While we're on the subject, does it attach to the slide? Again, you can't really see it here.

It looks like it might be slightly rounded, but it's there.... does it attach to the slide?Yes, it rotates and locks to the front of the slide.

It's there... It's just black on black, and it's hard to see. However, there are 1911s with bull barrel, and they won't have a barrel bushing.

Nate, you may have been seeing pseudo 1911 type pistols, not actual 1911 and 1911A1 pistols. The pseudos have all sorts of non standard gizmos. Not the original govt models, they are the real mccoy. Part of the trouble is folks' tendency to call something that looks like a 1911 US Army a 1911. It's not; it would be a 1911 type pistol, at best.
I think this is where newly minted enthusiasts are done a disservice, not being given accurate info. Once you have a bit of experience, feel free to butcher the language among your fellow experts. They will know what you mean even if your words are not accurate. HTH

Here's a pretty good picture of the barrel bushing here. It's on a slightly customized Argentine Sistema actually, but that is the same configuration as the original government model 1911A1s had.
You can see the button on the bottom that locks it in place. Pushing the button it allows the bushing to rotate for removal.

Nate,
Something that wasnt mentioned is that it MUST be outside the slide. You depress the piece under it and then turn it to remove the spring etc...
