show me your custom AR15/m16

December 22, 2008, 10:40 PM
I like seeing others custom AR's. and no model bashing please. Mine is a Bushmaster lower with a 2 stage Jewel trigger, Bushmaster upper, E.R.Shaw 24" fluted free floating bull barrel, finger groved pistol grip, 9-24x40 Bushnell Banner scope. It shoots dime size groups at 100 yards, likes 50 grain v-max with 23.6 grains of benchmark. I'de like to see yours.

What's fun if no bashing is allowed?:p

December 22, 2008, 10:46 PM
Great looking gun, btw.

December 22, 2008, 10:56 PM
nah, feel free to bash my scope. Ill get a good one one of these days.:barf:

December 22, 2008, 10:59 PM
Tools and technologies are fine and dandy, but it's the person behind them that really counts.

Claude Clay
December 22, 2008, 11:03 PM
i would never bash your gun. but can we bury the case?:D

December 22, 2008, 11:09 PM
mine was les then $200 and it works great. Ide like a Bushnell Elite, I hear lots of good reviews about those, they rival leopold from what I hear. I just like Bushnell for some reason. they are made by bausch & lomb now. they make contacts AND when you go to their site the first thing you see is "perfect vision" real big on their page and they also make telescopes and telescope lenses so they have just got to make awesome scopes, har

December 22, 2008, 11:11 PM
I love that case. its a conversational piece at the range. plus it fits me so well.

December 22, 2008, 11:25 PM
for some reason that rifle looks very familiar to me.

(twilight zone music)

we didnt go this last weekend by the way, but i did just load up about 350rds of 45. rn and fn, all hard cast.

changing my turret and shell plate back to .223 tommorow and try some of that benchmark you got me.

p.s. by the way, call dave (cough cough)

December 22, 2008, 11:40 PM
that caugh sounds pretty bad. you should have that looked at, really go to the DR and get it looked at.I have no large pistol primers so no .45's for me till later this week. I just loaded 250 50gr v-max. Its just to cold to move outside right now and target master doesnt have a 100yard. but I still need to spank you with my Mark II.

December 22, 2008, 11:53 PM
That is an unusual rifle case, good idea. I bet it does catch attention.

December 22, 2008, 11:55 PM
but I still need to spank you with my Mark II.

oh, its on like donkey kong.

Kind of Blued
December 23, 2008, 01:17 AM
Nice group!

Mine are all plain. :( I spend too much on guns and ammo to buy any doo-dads. Someday...

December 23, 2008, 01:43 AM
That case looks an awful lot like the plush guitar cases they make for the BC Rich Warlock.

Also, I didn't know there was such a thing as a "custom" AR. :neener:

December 23, 2008, 10:22 AM
it has curb feelers and a hood scoop on it, that makes it "custom" here on the east side.

December 23, 2008, 11:34 AM
Full-auto, Spikes .22 upper, SRT Arms Cheyenne XL .22 suppressor.

December 23, 2008, 11:45 AM
thats a nice one, Ide like to see it being shot.

December 23, 2008, 11:56 AM
hey shaggy, i've got one similar (FA, 7.5" barrel, YHM suppressor, but with ceiner kit). if you can, you should really try shooting trap with it. so much fun

December 23, 2008, 12:47 PM
if you can, you should really try shooting trap with it.

What kind of hit ratio do you get doing that? Sounds like a great time.

none of mine have a happy switch, but these are the 2 that get shot the most.

December 23, 2008, 01:11 PM
I love that case. its a conversational piece at the range. plus it fits me so well.

Would you be a midget vampire?

December 23, 2008, 01:13 PM
there's something like 374 AR pic threads that's in the archive, it seems as though there's a new one posted weekly

December 23, 2008, 01:17 PM
lol HB. yea, yea im a midget vampire, only I broke my fanges off biting ankles cuz I cant reach the neck.
yea there are a bunch of AR pic threads now that I look. I just wanted to be one of the cool kids in this playground and have one too. I was hoping to see some of the 100 yard+ groups to go along with the guns that shot them.

December 23, 2008, 07:50 PM
there's something like 374 AR pic threads that's in the archive, it seems as though there's a new one posted weekly.
So, are you suggesting no more AR pic threads?

December 23, 2008, 09:15 PM
does anyone ever take pics of their groups at the range?

December 23, 2008, 09:46 PM

My budget frankengun.

Stag lower.................$105.00
DPMS LPK....................$50.00
Fiberlite stock..............$30.00
M1S 11.5" upper........ $315.00
Young BCG................$165.00
Houge grip..................$18.00
UTG A2 sight...............$25.00

December 23, 2008, 09:49 PM
I like your flash suppressor. thinking about getting my barrel threaded

December 23, 2008, 10:29 PM
Nothing really custom about it but it shoots real real good!

Oly arms, 16" bull barrel, Bushnell Legend 5-15X40 MD AO, lots of 30 rd. mags (but I really only use the 10), swivel base 6'9 bipod and it like 40 gr. Nosler's with H335

December 23, 2008, 11:03 PM
I like bushnell, The Legend and Elites are jsut as good as the high dollar scopes for half the price. And yea thats all I use is my 10 round clip, Ive got 5 30 rounders all loaded with 55 grain fmj. the lightest bullet ive tried was a 45 grain v-max. my buddies gun likes the 40 and 45 noslers and v-max, his has a factory bushmaster chrome lined barrel and it shoots damn near as good as my bull

December 26, 2008, 02:04 PM
Del-Ton Flat-Top, chrome-lined, 16" midlength upper
Double Star lower
A2 carry handle bought for cheap from some guy

does that count as custom? :D (

December 26, 2008, 02:20 PM
"carry handle bought for cheap from some guy"

yea that counts. anything bought from "some guy" and stuck on your rifle makes it uber custom. that barrel should be very accurate.

December 26, 2008, 04:09 PM
Yea, met the 'some guy' at a gun show, selling off certain things. One of which was a carry handle in good shape. It shoots pretty decent, actually.

December 27, 2008, 11:24 PM
I do take the light off when I go to the range.
I think my next thread will be called "your hot wife or g/f with your "evil black" gun. ya just cant get enough of girls with firearms, can ya? the correct answer is NO!!!!!

December 27, 2008, 11:40 PM
Fine fine I'll post a pic of my to something I killed with it. In this case an Arkansas Coyote

Superior arms lower, M1S 20" A3 chambered for 7.62x39mm

December 27, 2008, 11:59 PM
And I think waterhouse take's the win.

December 28, 2008, 12:18 PM
all the other Coyotes found where you killed that one are were like "dude we were walking along sniffing eachothers butts and i heard a pop and Bill just fell over dead, came back and found this 7.62x39 by where his body was which means, Jihad AHHHHHHH OOOOOOOHHHH". nice pic

December 28, 2008, 04:36 PM

December 28, 2008, 09:23 PM
what kind of optic is that?

December 29, 2008, 01:58 AM
Here's a few I put together (or helped with):

December 29, 2008, 03:39 AM
wheres that dude that used to brag about spending 4k on his with a happy switch or can? ill find the post and see where hes at now....

December 29, 2008, 03:46 AM
damn. Bart (moderator) killed the thread.

it was a good post from the get-go and quite a few people egged on him, including myself, now i feel like a ba$****. i wonder what hes up to lately and how much he has invested in his AR

December 29, 2008, 07:27 AM
helz_mcfugly what kind of optic is that?

Aimpoint Micro T-1 on a LaRue LT660 mount.

December 30, 2008, 03:35 AM
AR N00b here so, bare with me.
For those of you with your scopes mounted on the flat top with no riser rail, how do you pull back on the charge handle? Do you just go one handed?
I'm curious because my new ugly duckling .223 is a 20" bull barrel so I am going to go ahead and mount a scope rather than a red dot on it and the blasted thing seems to get in the way of the charging handle something fierce.

December 30, 2008, 06:56 AM

You can get an extended charging handle release latch to replace the stock part. Use a punch to drive out the roll pin, take out old latch, stick in the new one, drive pin back in. It's that easy. Two that come to mind are the Badger Ordnance "Tac Latch" and PRI "Big Latch".

December 30, 2008, 09:48 AM
heres what i have pics of available...bad pics but anyhoo

46 ACP, RRA Lower, Lauer supressed upper, Timney Trigger, and lots more...

You guys rock in my book!

December 31, 2008, 10:14 AM
I've posted this pic way too many times, but I'm proud of her and can't resist...

I think it qualifies as custom because it's chambered in 204 ruger. It's my first build. Target pic is 5 shots at 100yds, repeatable...

December 31, 2008, 12:59 PM
RockyMtnTactical, nice light saber.

Too bad it wont mount on the rifle...

It's that easy, unless you accidentally slip when compressing the spring with the new one and your spring goes flying where you hear it bounce off the wall but then don't find it for 3 years.

Or, it's that easy unless you drop the tiny tiny roll pin into a giant box of brass, never to be seen again.

And so on.... :D

If you like getting smacked in the face with muzzle blast then this is the firearm to shoot!

And really, who doesn't?

any of these work or are you wanting the one with rails?

those are perfect. thanks. Im not a big fan of front rails they make the gun pretty heavy but im open to options...

how you like the model1 barrels? any idea who actually makes them?

March 10, 2009, 08:15 PM
Here's my custom budget/lowrent/ebay/swap/trade/scavenge Bushmaster.

No accessory cost more than $100.

Purists have been known to puke, tactical ninjas avert their eyes.

March 10, 2009, 09:34 PM
how you like the model1 barrels? any idea who actually makes them?
They are pretty good, the price is right, I know they are not top of the line, I also have a 20" stainless bull barrel w/ flat top upper I bought from them, Model1 uses E.R.Shaw barrels. I wouldnt buy a barrel from them if you are wanting sub MOA groups at 100+ yards. they are priced the way they are for a reason. A factory 16" H-Bar Bushmaster barrel will out shoot my 20" stainless bull barrel if that tells you anything. I doubt Ill buy another barrel from them unless im just building a plinker or to save $.

Well I just got back from my buddies gunshop and picked up some OD green things and a cheap bipod as I dont shoot this AR much on the bench but its nice to have one on just in case. so here is the new look. also got a green laser, man are those bright. I shined it on a water tower about 1.25 miles away and it was bright that far away.

March 10, 2009, 09:36 PM
Doc. nice build. that cheak rest came in a 2 pack didnt it? you wanna sell the other one? Ill paypal ya if ya do.

also Doc this would improve your accuracy

March 11, 2009, 12:45 PM
Thanks, but I never know what other optic I might buy down the road. Might need that shorter cheek rest.

The two of 'em only cost $20 anyway.

Yeah, I've been told a floating handguard would improve accuracy, but perimeter defense being my purpose, the gun shoots just fine. I just need to practice more at this point.

I shot it in a 30mph wind last weekend, and at 100yds I'm able to put 55grn Prvi FMJ's in a 2"-4" circle. Not good, but getting better.

I think the Bill Springfield trigger job has improved my accuracy more than anything. And for $35 shipped it can't be beat.

Yay... "Katie" can finally be considered custom...

March 13, 2009, 12:06 AM
HEY Deepskyy, when did you get that? or did I not know you had more then just Camillia. its really nice. Did you build it? did you see my latest build up there (frankenrifle), the green one. Im about to start on my 3rd, making this next one .308 being thats my favorite round. I have 2 .308s but they arent AR platforms, awesome rifles, but again, they arent Ar platforms, and the AR is my favorite rifle and 308 is my favorite so ill be making MY "gun of guns" I just put a complete AR10 lower on lay-a-way so it wont be to long untill its shootable but not complete.

March 13, 2009, 08:59 AM
doc & helz,

I picked up my first AR a while back and like you started cheaply upgrading it. I did finally invest in a high end (high dollar) sight as well. I picked up the four rail hand guard slightly used and found the Magpul grip set the same way. I wanted a light but did not want to have it anchored to the front grip as I also picked up a cheap folding bipod. Here is the final result. If I take the EOTech sight off the gooseneck and mount it directly to the top of the handguard I can perfectly co-witness, but on the gooseneck it is too high.

I really like both of your rifles....I guess I should have put one of my pmags in the picture instead of the bushy mag.

Oh helz,

The .308 is also my favorite rifle caliber. I have a Winchester Pre 64 Model 70 built in 1958 that is my pride & joy and a tack driver. It was rated at 95% original and even has the original Weaver Scope on it. That scope is adjusted via the rings and not the scope itself.
I am going to build an AR10 in the future with a 20 barrel in .308 for hunting/sniping/whatever else comes along.

Guns and more
March 14, 2009, 08:13 PM
Your AR is cool but your coffin gun case is WAY cool. Can I ask where you got it? I did a search and found nothing similar online
short of a soft coffin guitar case.

March 14, 2009, 10:29 PM
yea I did take out the bottom lining and used a spay adheisive to get it back in over a layer of foam, its easy to screw it up because there are wooden support boards that go across at each end of the support, so be very careful when you are ripping out the support after youve ripped out the lining. you can see the seams where the raised support use to be. be sure and post yours when you make it. Im about to convert my short coffin case for my AR15 16".

March 14, 2009, 11:12 PM
Oh, man would I be in trouble if Cammie was a real chick... I wrong named my rifle!!!
Katie seems like a good name for the other one I just got. See my other thread for more details!!!

Anyway... does anyone know any tricks to getting the stock handrails off???

March 15, 2009, 01:24 AM
My girls!
Cammie, and Katie
Katie is now... custom as I put the stock handgaurds from the MP15 on instead of the DPMS factory gaurds. The MP15 stock setup is much sleeker, and I do believe a bit lighter. Really helps the already great feel and balance of the rifle!

March 16, 2009, 03:40 PM
LMT's are top of the line, and that one xd9od put up on post #81 is pretty F'n nice, and Ide have to say its pretty darned custom, I now all that stuff doesnt come standard on them. but what did he win? :neener:

Nice rifle. Everybody here has shown some nice iron (uh...aluminum) but I love a Colt.

March 17, 2009, 02:29 AM
Rob_s... M4C members have an unfair advantage.

12131... it's a stock LMT. nobody here beats that for quality. do you disagree?

Helz... he's got a light and a VFG... that doesn't make it custom.

Get The Roof... flag on the play for SHOWING FOOT! 10 yard penalty, automatic 4th down!

And the expansion chamber actually sucks gasses out of the action instead of kicking them back inside like a normal can. With the can on it, it actually runs cleaner than without.

And these are my long range guns. The MK11 is 5.56 and the MK12 is 308.

The MK11 has the PRI matched barrel and bolt that is used in the military version. The stock is of course Magpul and the can is the Ops Inc, just like the issued version.

The MK12 (DPMS SASS actually) has one of the early barrels made for the military contract. It has a huge free floated barrel under the handguard but the front end is not flutted. Instead it is stepped down for the Ops Inc can which was part of the package. Well, she has it now too. At present time she also wears the same Leupold scope as the issue.

PvtPyle, did you paint the Spatha yourself? I really like the color scheme. Also, are those rifles in your gunroom/safe? If so, I wish I had a room like that to display everything.

Here's my latest "custom" AR.

POF gas piston upper
Bushmaster lower
Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x Ill. TMR reticle M3
LaRue QD LT-104 mount
Troy front/rear HK battle sights
Magpul PMAG and MOE grip
Timney trigger on the way

April 10, 2009, 03:15 AM
I put the stock pistol grip back on it.

Bushmaster lower.
Colt upper in 5.56/1in7

Im thinking of adding the Magpul stock and am trying to decide which trigger to put in it.

Yes, we all know LMT ARs are quality stuff. But, I'm not gonna look at the picture of a gun and claim it's better than all others shown. It's just a pic. Hey, but that's just me. We'll just have to agree to disagree.:D

April 10, 2009, 03:40 AM
Btw, it's not a "stock" LMT. A stock LMT doesn't come with a DD Omega.:p

April 10, 2009, 11:39 AM
Yeah, I did the Spatha and the 308.

April 10, 2009, 03:36 PM
Not really custom but I really love my ar now that it is finished, funny thing is I thought I was saving money but buying lower and upper separate, man was I wrong as hell

Cameron do you teach a class, have a store front, or do you just have that many AR's?

Dr. Tad Hussein Winslow

Just so's I understand our agreed-upon definition of "custom". It's custom if it has:

1. Anything added

2. Any part swapped out

April 28, 2009, 10:59 AM
A while back I had purchased a dedicated .22 rimfire upper for some cheap practice and to give the local bushy tails & cottontails a place in my stew pot. I had been swapping the .22 upper back and forth with my Bushmaster .556/223upper assembly, which was sometimes inconveinent. I decided to look for another lower assembly for the .22 and found that they were either almost impossible to find or waaaay too overpriced. I went to the gunshow yesterday hoping to find a lower assembly, used if possible, for the .22 upper but instead found a guy that had a new in box stripped RRA lower, new in package RRA lower parts kit and new in package RRA 6 position stock with spring & buffer. All of these added together were 25% less than even bargain basement asssemblies. RRA lowers assemblies were ranging from $450-$475. I purchased the parts, took them home and followed the step by step instructions on this website, then assembled and tested the lower assemby. I was amazed just how simple it was to do so and everything works perfectly. I have 3 of the BlackDogMachine 27 round mags and added an inexpensive A2 style rear sight. No I did not shell out big bucks for the sight as this is a plinking and small game hunting rifle, so dont give me any flack about it.....please!!!

Now that I have disassembled an upper assembly and replaced the upper housing and now assembled the lower assembly and parts, I feel very confident in my knowledge of this black next may be a complete, from the ground up build!!

customize: To alter to suit individual requirements or specifications.

so yea, pretty much every AR anyone owns is "custom" unless they jsut buy it and never change a thing. but only a crazy person would do something like that right? :D

You all are entirely too generous about my LMT---it's a fun shooter and all, but does not hold a candle to some of the rifles prior to and following it. And yes, it did not come with an omega. it now has a Troy MRF-R on it and an aimpoint, and it still doesn't hold a candle to the ones previously mentioned.

Is it jsut me or is krieger the best barrel for accuracy. seems like everyone who has one can pull off some sub MOA constantly

August 4, 2009, 06:41 PM
Well Krieger, along with Hart and Lilja make some of the best barrels around, and not just for AR's. Before I get jumped on I know there are other manufacturers but those are the only ones that I have personal experience with. Anyway, here is my rifle. SI Defense lower, Mega Machine upper, Lilja 24" SS match bull barrel, Timney trigger 3 lbs., Young Mfg. NM chrome BCG, YHM tube, Magpul PRS, grip, trigger guard, chrome silicone buffer spring with Spike's buffer, Nightforce NSX 3.5x15x50 MLR, A.R.M.S. #35 QD track mount base w/rings, and Harris bipod.

Is it jsut me or is krieger the best barrel for accuracy. seems like everyone who has one can pull off some sub MOA constantly

I have two bolt action rifles with Krieger barrels, one in .308 Win and one in .300 Win Mag. Both rifles are very accurate out to 600 yards producing 3/4 MOA 20-shot groups (furthest I've shot with them so far). I don't know if Krieger barrels are necessary for an AR though. I'm not as good a shot as otrman but I have a DPMS 24" fluted heavy stainless barrel on the AR below and it'll shoot sub MOA 5-shot groups at 100, 200 and 300 yards consistently. That's with a 77gr SMK bullet and either IMR 4895 or Varget powder.

AR details: DPMS upper with 24" stainless fluted heavy barrel (1:8 twist), Bushmaster lower, Timney 3lb single stage trigger, Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm M1 FFP TMR reticle, LaRue QD LT-104 scope mount, PRI M84 Gas Buster charging handle with Military Big Latch, Troy folding HK style front and battle rear BUIS, MAGPUL PRS stock, MAGPUL PMAGs, MAGPUL MOE grip, Bushmaster varminter handguard, Harris bipod.

August 4, 2009, 07:56 PM
ortman, I have the same Timney trigger as you but I notice that you have something I don't ... a KNS hammer and trigger pin kit. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on that upgrade. Did you still use the four set screws inside the Timney trigger housing or are they redundant with the KNS kit?

August 4, 2009, 08:33 PM

since I finally finished getting everything I wanted for it (for now), there are some updated pics :)

August 4, 2009, 11:14 PM
1858, you still have to use the 4 set screws in the trigger. This is my first venture with a drop-in trigger in a AR and was concerned that if the set screws did somehow manage to loosen one or both of the pins could come out rendering the rifle useless. The KNS pins eliminate that worry. Even if the set screws loosen the trigger will still function, I checked. Probably a non-issue but I figured 40.00 is cheap insurance and I kinda like the way they look on the rifle. Sometimes I kinda over think things a little, lol. Those Krieger barrels do get pricey, around 600.00 drop-in ready, about the same for Hart, the Lilja barrel was under 500.00 shipped. As shown by the groups their barrels are no joke. DPMS uses very good barrels too.

August 5, 2009, 12:38 AM
ortman, thanks for the tip. Those KNS kits are $30 at Midway so I'll think about it (for the reasons that you mentioned). One of the benefits of the Timney drop-in trigger is that the trigger and hammer pins don't rotate as they do/can for factory or other aftermarket triggers. This eliminates wear on the holes in the receiver where the pins reside.

August 5, 2009, 05:25 PM
That was one of the things I liked about the Timney is that the trigger and hammer did not ride on the factory pins. So I guess instead of being anti-rotation pins I'm using them as anti-fall out pins, lol. I've have Timneys in several rifles in the past and loved them, 1st in an AR and so far I'm not disappointed.

August 5, 2009, 08:57 PM
I have a timney in a Mauser 98 .308 that I made into a nice benchrest rifle. you can set that thing to fire with mind control. its crazy how sensitve you can make them. I love the Timney, I have a Jewel 2 stage in my Ar. I love it as well but if I had known the timneys were so good I would have saved myself alot of money and went with that in my AR. the jewel is an awesome trigger dont get me wrong but for WAY less money i could have went with a Timney that would have felt just as nice.

August 5, 2009, 11:49 PM
I'll update mine since it has changed since you guys have last seen it. Also, forgive the bathroom pics, the best lighting is in there.

I have a timney in a Mauser 98 .308 that I made into a nice benchrest rifle. I love the Timney, I have a Jewel 2 stage in my Ar.

I like the 3lb single stage Timney in my AR pictured above so I bought another Timney (solid trigger) for my POF. I haven't installed it yet and now am wondering if a 3lb single stage is the way to go for a carbine that I plan to use in three-gun matches. I've heard that the Timney may not be reliable with that kind of heavy use but I haven't seen any evidence presented other than anecdotal stuff. However, it's got me thinking about the Geissele DMR trigger. Talking of Jewell triggers, all three of my Remington 700s have Jewell triggers ... easily the best 700 trigger on the planet ... and yes, I have an X-Mark Pro too.

I just finished making changes to this one today.

Colt 6940
Magpul CTR stock
Magpul MOE grip
Magpul XTM rail covers
Magpul ASAP Sling adapter
Troy Flip up rear sight

The only thing left to upgrade is the sling itself. I am waiting on an MS2 sling but no place has them right now. =\

She is a hell of a shooter. So far I have clocked about 2500-3000 rounds without a single issue except one FTF that I traced back to a faulty mag. Also I have only cleaned it once. :D

1858, Just a thought for your carbine, look at the Timney trigger for the AR-10 in 4 lb. pull, it will work in AR-15's. The only knock with the Timney AR-15 trigger has been some reports of it not firing mil. spec. ammo with the hardened primers. Direct words from phone call with Timney is if you have that issue is to replace with the AR-10 trigger, hammer and hammer springs are slightly heaver. I ran 20 rds. of 62 gr. S109 mil surplus thru mine just to see and every one went boom.

Ortman, Is Federal XM193 considered to be mil.spec with M41 primers? According to Federal's web site, XM193 is manufactured to military "visual" standards whatever that means.

Anyway, I shot ten rounds of XM193 from the AR above with no issues. I'd agree with Federal's accuracy claim of 2 MOA (at 100 yards at least).

Thanks for the tip re the AR10 trigger.

1858, yes the M41's should be the hardened primers.

I like my setup for long-range coyotes to about 500 yds.--an ISSI AR .223AI 26" Hart 9-twist, Bushmaster lower. I'm using the old DPMS VLD magazine and shooting the JLK 65 Low Drag at 3050 mv. Adapted the reticle in the PFI 3-9x 22 Long-Rifle Rapid Reticle for the trajectory of my load.

Pics are on in the article "L-R coyotes a custom AR and the little scope that could."
