One of my favorite guns, my 617, is completely disassembled. It is getting the following:


Action slicked up
hiviz front sight
cylinder throat chamfer
forcing cone chamfer
rounded trigger
bead blast and selective nickel plating of hammer and trigger
trigger stop pin tuned
lightened rebound spring
badger grips


Got some DS10 speed speedloaders on the way.

Am I missing anything?

Oh yeah, the finish. I'm really struggling with my decision. I initially decided to bead blast the whole gun. Can't make up my mind right now.

Thinking I may bead blast the frame and just the flutes of the cylinder.

Opinions?

I'm looking for easy maintenance/cleaning. I don't mind if it looks cool either ;).

Cylinder throat champfer? Do you mean champfering the charge holes?

Champfer the forcing cone? Do you mean recutting the forcing cone with something like the Brownell's kit?

The rest sound reasonable. Most are a matter of personal preference.

Recrown the muzzle.

If it were mine, before I sunk the extra money into it, I'd want to be sure the timing, lockup, chamber-to-bore alignment, and chamber throat dimensions were all in spec.

I'm thinking of having my 617 re-finished in Black,find some better fitting service grips (I had to use styrofoam plates and a tooth pick to seal up the gaps between the grips)

And I've got to order 4 speedloaders,2 double carriers,masking tape,black spraypaint,and a can of clear coat (For the new grips)

And a target crown on the muzzle and maybe have some of the undelug taken off (Make it look more like a classic smith,exposed ejector rod) or have a small light rail cut into it.

The front sight idea is a good one (Do they offer Blaze orange lite pipes?)

yep- Hiviz makes one specifically for the 617. It is model #sw617. Imagine that. green or orange.

As far as finish goes, and you asked for opinions, I like consistant finish over the entire revolver. Bead blast would look great.

Champfering the charge holes is a matter of personal preference.

Recutting the forcing cone is usually good, but only really necessary when the forcing cone is rough or unever or not concentric with the bore. I have seen these things on new centerfire revos, but not on a 617 (yet).

I find the Millet adjustable rear sight a little less cluttered and prefer it over the factory sight on my 617. That's not a slam of the factory sight, it just that me and my aging eyes need all the help we can get:)

Thanks for the pics. Finished my action work for now. SA went from 6.5 lbs to just under 3lbs on crappy RCBS gauge. Feels great. Test fired it 20 times. So far, so good.

Still wish the DA was lighter. Couldn't check it though. Gauge only went to 8 lbs.

I just got a 17 with 4" full lug. I really enjoyed shooting it the other day but would like a trigger/action job on it and a set of those Millet sights.

Are you doing the T/A work yourself or someone else doing it? Any names for a T/A job?

Did it myself.

Did not mess with the main spring. Cut one loop off the rebound spring. rounded and smoothed the rebound slide. Removed a bur on the trigger side of the sear. Polished sear. cleaned up everything that touches anything. Degreased the whole thing and lightly lubed and reassembled. Proud of myself. Feels great. Went from 6.5#'s SA to just under 3.

That must have been the world's worst Smith and Wesson trigger as I've never encountered one that letoff in single action at more than four pounds.

It had a rather large bur on the trigger side. Sort of looked like the part had been hit with a hammer or something.

And again, this was with a crappy RCBS trigger pull gauge.
