Help! I have no success in getting pics to load or to successfully attach a pic to a post! I have read the vB help page, and tried following the instructions, but I can't get it to work. I have a cable modem link, and have no trouble uploading files to my yahoo webpage or attaching pics/files to emails, but to a thread--never works for me. What am I doing wrong?

TIA!
Vicky

Hi Vicky,
What kind of problems are you having? Does it give you an error message or something? Maybe your image file is too big...

Which is better than uploading it straight into THR where is uses storage space.

Why do some posts have attached photos directly in the post while other posts show a link which must be clicked on to download the photo? How do you put the photo directly in the post?

Thanks for any help for a computer challenged person.

To attach photos directly in your post you need to have that photo already on a public server (i.e. uploaded to one of the hosting services such as ofoto, yahoo, your ISP’s space, etc.). Then you just link to it using [ img ] URL to your picture [ / img ] format found as an option while posting a new message. If you don’t have your picture hosted on a public server (it’s just sitting on your own hard drive), then you can upload it to THR server via “Upload” button and view it by clicking on the link at the bottom of your post.

To have an attachment show on a post without having to download it:

Attach the picture from a file on your computer (make sure it is smaller than the required size).

Submit post.

Right click the attachment and select "copy shortcut".

Edit post, place cursor where you want the pic and click "image". Paste shortcut into img box. Make sure the shortcut is on a line by itself (not with any text). Save changes.

What Larry suggested may or may not work on some boards. For instance, it'll work here on THR, but would not work on 1911Forum.com, even though they are both vBulletin type boards. I guess they could be set up differently...

OK- got new digicam- but my pics are too big to attach. How can I shrink them? Or do I have to take them all at VGA resolution to begin with? Or how do I get them hosted on the 'net so I can insert a URL?

As far as image size - you can either take your pictures at a smaller resolution, or you can use some sort of image editing software (such as Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw, etc.) to re-size your pictures. To host your images on the 'net you need to find a host. ISPs usually provide some (limited) amount of space you can use for hosting your files (unless you're using one of those free ad-driven ISPs), so check with them to see what you get. Then, you need to upload your files to their server, and then just "point" your link to that file.

I tried to insert an image hosted on Shutterfly.com, but all I got was a red "X". Is there still a file size limitation when you insert the URL?

Nope, there's no limitation when you use a link. Where did you include the hosted image? I'd like to take a look at the post, might spot something.

There shouldn't be any size limitations, AFAIK. There could be several reasons your image doesn't show up... First, double-check the path to your image file (it should look like http://www.domainname.com/something/yourfilename.jpg [or .jpeg, or .gif, or .bmp]). Note that some ISPs' are case sensitive when it comes to file names and extensions (so image.jpg is different from Image.jpg is different from image.JPG etc.). Also, check to make sure Shutterfly.com allows external image linking. Your firewall settings may also not be allowing your images to be downloaded/displayed.

This is the link I copied in:

What do you think?

Aleko

Looks like they require an account to be able to view pictures hosted with them. Based on that, I'm pretty sure they block external linking...

Yep. You might see the picture since you are already logged in on your own computer, but all we see is a logon screen. Since it is not an image, the red-x will appear in its place when that link is included between the IMG tags.

Thanks- I'll keep that site in mind. My problem is my files are too big. I need to take smaller pictures, or find a way to re-size them.

Although not as user friendly as some of the other programs you should be able to resize your images just using the default windows Paint program as long as you are not running NT or some version of windows that does not support jpg. Open the pic, select Stretch/Skewfrom Image menu. Under the stretch portion select the same percentage in both Horizontall and Vertical, say 50 or 75 percent. As long as you do them both the same amount I think you will be OK.

Edit: I just noticed how old this thread is, guessing you already found a way to do this :o
