Hey guys, is it ok to put a little Hoppes 9 in the walnut when tumbling brass, or does that fall into the Brasso category of no-no's. I can't smell any ammonia in it, but I'm not sure. Anybody know?

I always liked Brasso-anymore I use a little chrome polish.

You're better off just sticking with the products that are made for actually polishing cartridge brass in your tumbler. Personally, I use Berry's Brass Polish, since they sell it by the quart container. I've used Midway, Dillon and Berry's, and they all work well.

According to the Hoppes No 9 MSDS, it contains kerosene, ethyl alcohol, xylene, amyl acetate, ammonium hydroxide and citronella.

The kerosene, ethyl alcohol, xylene, amyl acetate are going to be the gunpowder solvents. Ammonium hydroxide would be the copper remover, and citronella something that smells nice.

I would not pour that into my tumbling media.

The only additive for walnut is nu-finish. All others do the same or less and cost more. :neener:

Sure, but it won't do much of anything. You don't need a polish in a tumbler anyway. Brass needs to be clean, not shiney.

A car wax or case polish does have it's advantages over nothing at all if you plan to store the tumbled cases over a period of time. It will help to slow down tarnish.

About a cap full...it doesn't take much (I use Dupont Car Polish.)

But I don't use polish for cleaning cases before decapping/resizing...I have reservations about putting any compounds inside the case to possibly have some effect with the powder over time. I use the polish in media reserved for final tumbling of loaded ammunition for half an hour.

I bought some Cabela's corn cob media, 6 pounds with 8oz brass polish, one hour in this stuff and my brass is gleaming, cost 12 bucks.:)

REDNECK, that'll be fine if you are going to shoot the ammo within a couple of months or so. But the brass will tarnish over time.

To prevent that, tumble your loaded ammo for a half hour in a dedicated batch of media with a few squirts of car polish added (I use Dupont Spray Car Polish, some people swear by Maguires)...no Brasso or case cleaner added. The result will be clean ammo free of oil, shiny for years...just like commercial ammo!:D.
