Greets and Merry Christmas All,

I own a High Standard 1911 GI 45 and had some issues with it today. 4 times while shooting a box of ammo, the slide failed to go all the forward and the weapon would not fire. I bought new Winchester ball ammo and the weapon was clean before I started shooting. What is the most common cause for this behavior? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if this pistol had previously been running smooth and just started this behavior, I'd do a thorough cleaning of the pistol and mags to include the extractor and it's channel and also check it's tension. Did it happen with all mags, just with one or just on the last rd of the mag or ? ? ? ...

Was it cold out? Grease on rails can slow the slide down as can wearing heavy gloves while shooting and having the glove(s) drag on the slide as it cycles. Not firing when not fully in battery is supposed to happen to keep from having the pistol fire when not fully in battery with the barrel safely locked into the slide.

What kind of Mags are you using?

Get a standard 1911 magazine. The High Standard GI I recently saw in a gun shop had a pretty strange looking magazine.

Yep, a proper magazine is critical...get a real Colt 7 rd mag with a dimpled follower or order one from Metalform's website (with the extra power spring and hybrid feed lips)...might want to read some of 1911Tuner's threads in the gunsmithing section on some how tos and what nots for the 1911 pistol...and if that don't work just take it and head north to 1911Tuner in North Carolina...he'll set it straight..;) Hope you like strong coffee, or as Tuner calls it Turbo Coffee..:what:

PS: CheckMate has some 7rd mags that are suppose to be "Tuner approved" also....check those out.

Riding your thumb along the slide can retard the motion or slide speed enough to make it fail to operate properly.

Poor magazines can also cause problems.

Dirty gun or one without enough lubrication on the rails.

Short cycling caused by aftermarket additions like a recoil buffer.

You may be limp-wristing too..... try tightening up your grip and see if this helps at all.
