Beretta owners...

You'd better save up in case you need to shoot Mel Gibson at close range - ad in Shotgun News:
"Keep Your Gun Together - Don't Be A Statistic!"
"The all new 'SLIDE-KEEPER' (pat. pending) prevents the possibility of losing the slide of your Beretta M92/M9 in a scuffle, yet still allows for easy field stripping. No accessory is more necessary than the 'SLIDE-KEEPER'. Put your confidence back in one of the most reliable arms made.....$19.95...."
Kidding aside though, is this really a realistic concern?

I think it is laughable. The person that dreamed this up probably figured it was a great way to make a few extra bucks.

Hahahahahahahaahahahahaha  :D
How old is your Beretta and what type of ammo do you shoot from it? Possible, yes. Probable, not bloodly likely *
How about an M1 Garand unpinger so the enemy doesn't charge you? :D
* don't sue me if you have a really old Beretta without the F and you shoot 9mm ++++P++++ from it and you get hit!

Might be a concern for Bugs Bunny or Elmer Fudd, but not even here in the land of make believe is that a possibility! :D :D :neener: :D :D

If somebody's pointing a Beretta at me I'm not gonna try and pull the slide off. :D I could see trying to do that in a scuffle though....but that's a product I would never use. I would agree that it's silly.
Hey, anybody watched that LW4 scene in slow motion? I wonder if Jet Li even pushed the takedown lever...

Ohhhhhhhhhhh :o
I thought this was about the slides coming back and hitting you in the fore-head because Beretta slides do that....

If it is a danger for this to happen to a Beretta, it must be common that SIG owners have their guns taken apart in every fight. The SIG takes down even faster and easier than the Beretta! If I had a SIG, I would seriously consider getting a pad lock placed on my take-down lever for this reason.

All Beretta 92's have built in "slide keepers".
Unfortunatly the factory lists it as a "Trigger".

Sorry - but no it doesn't. You have to rack the slide to the rear (I have to lock it there - YMMV) in order to operate the Sig take-down lever. You don't on the Beretta.

Oh yeah. I forgot about having to lock the slide back first when breaking down a SIG. It has been over a year since I sold my 220 and I haven't touched a SIG in while.
The point is, I don't think it is a real problem that is worth worrying about. Of all the things I worry about when it comes to self defense guns, having some do a Jett Lee on me isn't high on my list. :D I am more worried about someone doing a Dirty Harry on me or even a Jack The Ripper.:D

Oh, the slide retention device. All 92FS's have them.

My former Beretta 92G Centurion had a modified takedown lever that made it a pain in the @$$ to strip. AFAIK this was a Beretta factory lever. It seems to me that if you've lost your tin foil hat and are desperate enough to want this item, Beretta would install it for free.

If you are fighting for control of a gun wouldn't you want it to become inoperable at that point anyways? If you win control, it is probably because you have the upper hand physically and you probably don't need a gun then. If you lose control you sure don't want he/them to have a working gun.

I think what this doohickey may be there for is to prevent some super-martial-arts-kung-fu-master from grabbing your 92 and pulling your slide off, a la Jet Li in Lethal Weapon 4 (scene in Murtaugh's house) and Jackie Chan in Rush Hour (scene out side of the Counsel's house where he defeats the two FBI agents and disassembles one of their 92s)
It's pretty easy to actually take the slide off with one hand from the front. The magazine does get in the way, tho.

Skunkabilly, you are right!!
In fact it not only comes back and hit you in the forehead it takes your head off..ask the 1000 headless Navy Seals who had to sue the company. I heard it was designed this way so that you could 'deliberately' let your gun be snatched so that when the bad person tries to use it against you it would decapitate him instead. Somehow no one told the Seals that this is how the gun works. Smart idea, that slide is like a 1.1" caliber bullet!!
By the way, what is a slide-keeper, is it the Bruniton finish on the slide or is it more like a crypt-keeper?

Yes, of course this is EXACTLY what the makers have in mind, fulfilling the (perceived) need to prevent what you decribed. That doesn't answer the question - the question is whether this is pure hype based on the movie scenes and would never actually happen, or is a truly realistic concern. Most here seem to believe it's sheer hype. Are you saying that you disagree, and think it's worth getting? I like No4's analysis myself, and think it's probably baloney, but I've never owned a Beretta, so I'm not qualified to analyze it. Seems to me, the moment someone gets close to you and reaches for your gun, you should have already shot them or be shooting them at that instant, and if you don't, you're better off running away or having an inoperable gun if you lose possession of it.
Functionally, this thing replaces the existing slide stop, BTW. Is it worth $20? Or not even a squirt of warm urine?

I'm not a Beretta owner, but I am very familiar with them.
A few points:
1) Most of the problems with the slides coming off of the Berettas while firing were from the metallurgy involved, not necessarily design deficiency. Saw it happen once, the slide broke directly in front of the extractor- so actually it was only the rear portion of the slide, not the whole thing, which would be for all practical purposes impossible. The slide would have to also break off where the guide rod pokes through the front as well as shear off toward the front part of the scallop in the slide in order to get past the barrel assembly and frame. The metallurgical problem has been corrected a long time ago, at least on the U.S. Gov't issue guns.
2) If you are in a bad enough situation where you have to draw and you still let some weenie dissassemble your pistol for you like that, well, you probably deserve the:cuss: -whipping that's coming......
