I've got an original 1873 Winchester in .38 WCF (.38-40), which is 40 caliber.

Can cast lead bullets at .402 safely be used?

Thanks

Slug the bore to get groove diameter. .002" to .003" over groove diameter should be ok. Read this>>http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_/ai_n16808616 another good one http://www.chuckhawks.com/38-40win.htm

Barrel measurements are nice, but the round must chamber FREELY. If a cartridge with a .402" bullet goes right in, it is ok. If it does not, it is too big, no matter what the barrel slugs out at.

I have a .44-40 with .428" barrel but a close chamber. Anything but Winchester brass, I have to load .427s.
