[Milkmaster]

I promised pictures after the clean up and partial restoration of an old 870 I picked up at a local pawn shop.

Well here she is!

I cleaned every nook and cranny I could on the old Wingmaster. Now I wish I wish I had taken some "before" pictures to show as well. The furniture actually cleaned up better than I had hoped. Most of the crud was just some sort of sticky mess on the wood. CLP cleaned it off after wiping it down and letting it sit for a while. The original glossy finish was still there and the grain is beautiful. The speckeled rust marks cleaned off as well with patience and the bronze wool. Two days worth of effort is well worth what came out afterwards. I think this forgotten old gun now has a few generations left in it!

I don't know about being well taken care of... The grain in the wood was only barely visible when I got it, and it had some rust on the outside to buff out. Whoever owned it had rubbed the gun down with oil from time to time but never disassembled and cleaned it good. The oil inside it is what saved it over time. I never figured out what the sticky mess was on the outside. It resembled something like hair spray mixed with dirt! However, with elbow grease and patience everything came off to reveal what you see now. So far I am pleased. Now I want to see if it works with live ammo as well as it does on the dummy loads I have cycled through it. I feel pretty confident it will.

I wiped a gun down with an old bottle of Hoppes 9 about a year ago, and recently I picked it up and the gun was all sticky, with a coating much like you describe!

I bet someone wiped it down with Hoppes and somehow, it turned hard on the gun.

Heck, that gun ain't old. That checkering design didn't even come out until 1979.
