I have had the itch to get a hi power type pistol lately and was wondering where to get one.
I can't afford a new browning or FN so I was looking at Charles Daly, but they seem to have stopped making them. Is there anywhere to still get a good HP clone? Or even a good recomendation of where to find a used Browning or FN?
Thanks

Look for one of the Feg copys, or better yet one of the South American FMs. orchidhunter

If you look hard you can still find FEGs and FMs for under $300. I've seen at least 3 in the last year.

Sarco has the FM Detective listed for $295.95 and Florida Gun Works has the FEG P9M listed for $289.95.

You have got to watch out for Florida Gun Works. It is best not to have any thing to do with them. orchidhunter

Save your money and buy a used FN made Browning or FN branded Hi Power. Get the real thing. For a few bucks more it is worth it.

I have an Argentenian FM and it's a good shooter. Rough looking, typical military pistol but very accurate and reliable.
Definatly worth the $325.00 I paid.

Hold out a month for a real Browning. That said my Argie shoots with the best of them. I suggers Stephan A Camp's site highpowersand handguns.

I have owned an FEG, and it was a perfectly good clone...100% reliable.
I also owned an FM Argie clone, the type with the 1911 style front end on the slide. The slide cracked from the front of the ejection port to the bottom.
I found my current '73 belgian HP at a gun show. It was well used, the finish looked as if it had been carried in a tool box without a holster. Got it for $275 from a private dealer, no tax, no paperwork.
It shoots great. The finish wear dosn't bother me, not does the mag safety which so many want to remove.
I had to refinish the grips, as they were totally devoid of finish.

I have owned two FEG PJK-9HP Hi-Power clones. Both have been very reliable and consistently accurate, they just weren't as nicely finished as the FN-produced version. One of the FEGs had a trigger that was sharply edged and a hammer that would bite a bit. Both of those could have been easily corrected. As long as they're in good shape, I have no hesistation about recommending the FEG.
If you can get the FN, do so. A used one from $450-600 is worth the money. If you don't care about looks or branding as much, an FEG at $275-350 is going to shoot almost as well if not the same and should be just as reliable.

It looks to me like Browning has added the Hi-Power to their 2008 catalog. I also heard that they are starting to arrive at some gun shops. If that is true it should take the pressure off the used HP market.
Good luck.

I have one of the Charles Daly HP's, or had, I think I have a buyer for it. They are great pistols. You are right, they are no longer being made, but they are almost entirely Browning compatible parts-wise. They are good shooting, reliable pistols. At least mine was. I switched to a Charles Daly commander-sized 45 as a carry pistol because I got too sweet a deal on one to pass up. If you can find another one of the HP's the XS sights it comes with are very good. Lots of nice features included from the factory, good trigger, and nice rubber panel grips. I really couldn't name a single negative.
