Ne4ed suggestions on stuck stock.

About 20 years ago I had a custom rifle built on a Remington Model 30S. Recently I tried to pull the barrel/action from the stock for cleaning and found that they are stuck together. I am guessing the smith bedded the action and wound up gluing the metal and wood together.

So how can I separate them without doing damage?

One suggestion I got was to freeze the rifle by packing it in ice to make the metal contract. Think this will work? Any other ideas?

PS

I guess I can't edit the title to delete the 4 my fat fingers got in there? Also can't delete and start over?

A good glass job will be very very tight the first few times it is removed from the stock.

Try taking out the action screws, then "wiggling" the barrel and forearm apart by flexing upward on the barrel. Sometimes that will work the action & recoil lug loose.

I have stock-makers guide-pins that fit the action screw holes, but have no heads on them. You can use a big hammer on those suckers!

But ultimately, if your "gunsmith"? failed to use release agent on the metal before he glassed it, it probably isn't coming out!

BFH!

Try what rcmodel said and give it some good movement in case it was a good bedding job.

If he glassed it in the only way your getting it out is a big F Hammer. Throw some blankets down and give her a wack with a rubber mallet.

Benchrest guns are routinely glued in using assorted compounds without a release agent so that there's no possibility of movement.

The most common sure way to get one to let go is to put a household iron on the scope blocks to get the whole receiver to warm up slowly and eventually release.

I've built my rifles using both accraglass and J-B Weld to glue the action into the stock. Both will let go with heat.

Don't try to hasten the process with a heatgun or hairdryer or the like.

There were some people who felt that freezing worked too, but I never tried that.
