I'm stalling and re-thinking my plans to buy a Taurus PT-145... buy taking a serious look at the 99 Compact.

What do you folks think of the 99? (I'd probably go with the .40)

I'd get the SW99 or its compact brother long before I'd consider a Taurus.

I love my sw99 in .40. Great gun, better than I am. Everyone thats a fairly decent shot says it shoots great. Me....well I plink with it cause thats about as good as my contact wearing eyes can do.

The compact... Its just as good, but has the same problems any compact or subcompact will have. sheslinger bought one and both her and cslinger had a problem with jams if you limp wrist it at all. Since you can only get 2 fingers on it, maybe all of them if you use the mag extender, you really gota worry about form. I never got to shoot it tho. I know the fit and finish on everyone ive seen and even her's was really nice. Think he said it was stovepieping...search its only a month old or so post id say i forget what he/she exactly said. Its a fine piece, but if you dont have a strong wrist it might not be for you.

kinda thought about it for a while on why it would do what it did. its got a shorter barrel and slide. maybe the shorter spring is right on its full compression limits so if you limp wrist it, it doesnt fully compress as its so short and normal cycle gets it close to full compression. I dont know, didnt pull the gun apart. but if i had to guess its because of that. they shortened the barrel by like almost an inch. i know on my gun there is like 3 inches of travel i believe. take off an inch of spring, and think about it you still have to slide back the same ammount to eject the case. so spring coil binding is an issue to consider. now smith may have changed spring coil to coil spacing i dont know didnt look....but atleast my explanation sounds good :D

I dont think you really have to have the compact to concel easily. the gun is super narrow. only issue is if you cant find a good holster to tuck the grip up close to you. length isnt a huge deal for most people. I know i can easily put my gun in a fobus roto paddle, put my shirt over it and you cant see it. then again im huge :scrutiny:

I'm having a hard time figuring out why everyone seems to dislike the PT's?

It's 10+1, even in the very small .45, inexpensive, reasonable accuracy, and it's easily available... keep in mind that I'm looking at the "Pro" version - which *should* have all of the kinks worked out from the former versions.

If you KNEW that you could buy a PT and never find a crack in the frame, or any other part failure, would you folks think differently of it?

I'm presenting this scenario because I have yet to hear a foul word about the "Pro" version(s) and I'm having a hard time figuring out what the 99 has over the PT?

I have both and I would go for the SW99 Compact. My PT-145 hasn't had a jam yet and neither has my SW99. But it seems the SW99 has a better trigger than the Taurus and I shoot it better.
