i dont know alot about guns but my father who passed away about 20 years ago left behind a gun that i dont know much about. I put it up when he died and only recently when we moved remember it.

Its a smith and wesson five shot revolver. It has on the barrel 38 S.&.W. Special CTG. on the side it has made in USA Margas Registradas. The wooden handle has some some small silver embelms. The serial number is six digits.. 633xxx no letters.

Not sure what i am wanting to do with it but wanted to get some information on it.. Can anyone help me out.

thanks

Cool , Its always good to get another firearm, Sorry about how you got it though. Some will say you shouldn't Post a Serial # I agree. Anyhoo, Go shoot it and report back. Some one else will tell you what its worth.

Let us try to get more info.

S&W made several 5 shot revolvers. If this is a short/snub nose barrel I am leaning towards a Model 36 Chief Special.

How long is the barrel?

Is the gun blue or nickel?

When you open the cylinder, just above where it pivots out, are there any more numbers (Model numbers) such as 36 or 12 ?

Any way to get a digital picture and post it in a message like an email attachment?

Thats a model 36 smith & wesson. It's a VERY good revolver. If it's black, that means it's what they call "blued". Yours is what they call a square butt gun, as opposed to a round but. It refers to the grip frame. Here is one from GunBroker.com online auction site. It's like yours but with a shorter barrel. http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=119325856 and here is one with a round butt http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=119337638

remove the grips and list the number found on the butt. the long number on the crane is an assembly number, not the serial number

Revolver barrels are measured from the front of the cylinder to the muzzle.

Looks like a standard 3" Square-butt Model 36 to me.

Your serial number indicates a ship date of 1962.

"...nickel I guess..." Nope. Standard blued revolver. Nickel looks like chrome if it hasn't corroded.
"...Margas Registradas..." Marcas Registradas? Has to do with the 'trademark'. Spanish.
