CETME Mods,what have you done?

I`m the kind that can`t leave ANYTHING alone. I just have to tweak things and improve them or make them suit me. After test firing my new CETME for reliability (good) and deciding it`s a keeper I started in. First I noticed the front handguard gets mighty toasty after putting a few 20 rounders through it. I looked at some real G3 stocks and saw that they have functional vents and an aluminum heat shield in them. The US made G3 synthetic copys have neither. I started by putting the forend in the drillpress and put a hole the width of the slots in either end of each slot. It allows plenty of air flow and looks pretty cool IMO. ;) Then I cut pieces of thin aluminum to fit the full length of the forend (the G3 shield is only about 4" long) and installed it with 2 part epoxy. I can`t wait to burn up some ammo and try it out!
One other thing that bugged me was a lump on the right side of the pistol grip just behind the trigger guard and the shape of the top finger groove. So off it came for some reworking and sanding. Now it`s real comfy. :)
Next I`m considering a full length picatinny rail under the forend with a bipod and pistol grip (sorta HK21 like, but straight down) just for giggles. I also have to find a steel weaver rail I can plug weld to the top of the reciever. Then either a red dot or scope. Then it`ll really be tacticool. ;) Marcus

I'd like to know how well the scopes hold up on them. I know the FAL needs a whole new cover for things to actually hold zero.

I think it`ll be fine. The reciever is all one piece on the CETME and the factory scope mounts clamp onto it. If it`s good enough for a PSG-1 it`s good enough for my ol CETME. :) Since mine will be welded on it should be even better. At any rate I`m anxious to try it side by side with an FAL. To be honest I`ve always been more of an FAL fan but this thing is growing one me. Marcus

At least one guy on the CETME forum used JB Weld to attach a picatinny rail to the top of his CETME receiver. He dremeled out space for the pads on top of the receiver. He was very pleased with the results. Keeps the scope lower than scope mounts.

Slimline Hk forearms, of the plastic variety, have no vents, but they do have the metal heat shield. About the only HK91-ish forearms that have functional vents are the old wood style and the "Namibian" wide types.
Ergo-grip makes a Navy-style replacement grip. No bumps nor palm swells here. IIRC, they should also fit the CETME gripframe.

Please do!
I recently got one of the Century G3s with the slim black plastic forearm and it gets uncomfortably warm after 100 rounds, especially with the last 20 fired off pretty quickly. I've been thinking about installing a heatshield myself, so I am very interested in your experience.

Your G3 should already have a (small) heat shield but I guess I was wrong about the vents. I`m hoping the vents will help a lot. Marcus

I finally tried it out today. I fired 60rds. in a fairly short period of time, the last 20 quite fast. The front handguard got a little warm off the bat and never got any hotter than that. Without the holes and shield it would have been getting uncomfortably hot already. I`m pretty pleased with it. :) Marcus

First thing I did to my Cetme was cut off the front sight post and reweld another on farther to the actual side, as I did'nt have enough windage adjustment. Second, the leangth of pull was way short, so I built an extension out of fiberglass and bedding compound. Sound's ughly, but actually looks pretty good. I also used 1/4" rubber to make a buttpad. Other than that, and smoothing the trigger out some, it's pretty much stock. I need a scope mount, but have been too buisy playing with other toy's:D
