depending on distance, surroundings 158 grain 'may' have too much penetration...leaving you liable.

I keep hollow points in mine, 158's. I don't mean to be flippant, but when it comes to self preservation, I'm not concerned about over penetration.

I'd suggest a box of 125gr .357 mag Golden Sabers by Remington for carry. They're medium velocity, around 1,220 fps from a 4" barrel, so that would put them at around 1,100 fps from the short SP101. A little heavier and better construction than the 110gr bullet which runs 1,290 fps from a 4". You can still use whatever bullet weight you want for practice as theirs not enough difference in point of impact at SD ranges to worry about.

Comparing the 110's to the 158's... the 110 gr bullets at 1,290 fps would have about 40% less recoil thant the 158's at 1,235 fps. Ballistics from Remingotons web site.

When I carry my 3 inch Model 60, I usually use the 110 gr .357s. I figure they are equivalent to the 115 gr 9mm in +p or +p+.

Shooting full power .357s in any j-frame is a handfull. Like one of the above posters, I have found the 125 grain Remington Golden Sabres to be the perfect compromise (DO NOT confuse these with Remington's regular 125 grain hollow points - your hand will never forgive you). Another medium power .357 is the Speer Gold Dot 135 grain. Both of these loads are quite manageable in 3-inch jframes.
