Just found a pit, about 1/4 inch long inside the barrel of my MK9. Seems to have occured during my trip to the range today, What in the world could cause a pit?

and not just some copper or lead fouling. SOAK the barrel in some quality solvent then scrub the hell out of it and see if it is still there.

Rust causes piting. Was your gun rusty?

Strong acids and bases can cause piting too? Did you leave any ammonia based cleaning agents in the barrel too long?

Corrosive primers can cause rust. Have you shot any surplus ammo through your gun?

My bet is though that if you had a clean barrel and went shooting and then cleaned the barrel and found the "piting" that you just need to clean it better. Fouling can be stubborn.

Took another look, with the hope that it might be rust or any of the other possibilities mentioned. Sadly, it really is a pit in the metal. I can see the recess and can feel it with a piece of wire.

I assume this is not safe to shoot.

What ammo were you shooting?

My CZ75 developed some ferocious damage in some parts of the bore, but the rest of it is still pristine. Very odd. Last ammo I shot through it was Winchester white box, then it sat for a couple months (can't remember if i swabbed the bore or not, but never had a problem leaving guns uncleaned for a good while.) I wonder if they had a contaminated lot, since I can't think of anything else that would have ruined my barrel like that.
