I'm considering dyeing a buff/tan/natural leather sling, and was wondering if there was a fool(me)-proof way of getting a nice, lasting result. If anyone's dyed a sling, belt, holster, whatever and can recommend some products and procedures I'd be obliged. Ed

I'd call your local Tandy leather and get advice from them. As a rule, they seem to like gun people. :)
For what it's worth, I use their plain ol' "heritage" dye or whatever they call it.
I'm also moving you to "accessories" where the handgunner/holster types can get a look at your question.

I've done it two ways with acceptable results.
The poor man way, with a (three) permanent black magic markers. and it worked great. I defy anyone to come in here and tell me just which one of my black slings was done this way.:neener:
And a more conventional approach of 'Kiwi Leather Dye'. It took more dye than markers, just kept giving it a couple coats a night until a week to ten days later it was black. Real black. I didn't boil it or heat it or anything. (Maybe thats why it took so long?)

I used shoe leather dye from the grocery store.
I did the brown leather belt holster for my ruger mkII to black with just a couple coats.
It has held up for close to 20 years of heavy use and is still jet black.

Milwaukee is famous for one type of liquid refreshment :D, but they are also the home for several makers of excellent leather dyes. My favorite is Fiebings. It is availble from any good shoe repair shop. My black leather is re-finished at least once a year, and I've even re-dyed russett and brown holsters to a nearly new looking black.
