CZ rifles

Today at a local shop, I got to examine a CZ rifle for the first time. I was impressed with the solid feel and mauser style action.

From some of the things I have read, it seems that a lot of PHs in Africa use the CZ platform.

Is it really that good?

Also, the European style stock (curved but not Monte Carlo) really seemed to fit me well. Does it reduce the felt recoil like the cast off Weatherbys do?

Your comments on their quality, reliability, and perceived recoil will be valuable, as this is my year to buy another big game rifle, likely in .300 magnum caliber. Thanks.

Great rifles. I believe the full stock versions with the curved down comb would be the exact opposite of a Weatherby stock. A Weatherby stock ramps up so as the stock comes back under recoil it falls away from your cheek. A comb that ramps the other way will do just the opposite and hit you in the cheek more as it comes back under recoil.

Yeah, not so much my cup of tea. I would REALLY not want to fire one of those in something like .300 magnum.

Yeah like all the old rifles from the 30's and 40's. I've got a pre 64 model 70 that ramps down like that AND has a checkered steal buttplate. You've gotta put on your big boy pants before a range session with one of those. My friend used to have one in 338 that would hurt my teeth.

Ugh. I'm glad I'm not the only one who dislikes getting punched in the face by an inclined plane--I'd almost begun to think I was a wuss. :p

I first experienced this with a Mosin 91/30. Since it was my first time firing a full-power rifle, I didn't know better than to try a cheek-weld contacting far back on the stock, where the incline is worst. Ow.

yes. (they are that good)

as for the recoil exagerated by the stock; we are talking about a hunting rifle here. you will not be down the range rattling through 1000's of rounds. If you don't like that particular pattern there are many others available from cz.

My carbine had teething problems, even after CZ took a look at it. I fixed it though, the magazines were screwed up. Even the new ones.

They say that the professional hunters want the controlled feed when out for dangerous game. They don't want a round to stove pipe when facing a charge. Take a look at the claw picking up a round when you slowly chamber. Very impressive engineering.
