I have a 5.5" Redhawk I carry when out and about in the woods. I also would like to use it for deer hunting. I live in Washington so there are a good amount of Blackbears where I go in the woods. What are your opinions on reloading with Gold Dots or XTP's, and what grain bullets???? I currently carry a 270 grn Gold Dot on top of a decent amount of 2400 powder.

What caliber and what speed?
This makes a big difference. Personally I don't like the XTP's they have issues with jacket separation; however, if you are shooting 45 colt you can get the .452 MAG version that has a thicker jacket that can hold up to those super hot 45 Colt loads.
I don't have a 44 mag so I am not sure if they are available in that or not.
Gold Dots are great for heavy and slow, they are basically a thick plated bullet and open up fine. Great for when you don't need heavy penetration.
The XTP "MAG" versions will give you increased penetration but you have to drive them fast or they might not open up on you.
Standard XTP are ok if you are running them slow and heavy. But not my first choice.

I am no expert, but XTP's are considered a "deep punch" HP for hunting.

I would stick with that 270 grain Gold Dot soft point you're using now.

Both are great bullets, and will get the job done.

If you reload, get some cast bullets, they penetrate better than the bullets you listed. But if you are set on the two listed, get a Hornady XTP Mags.
