I thought I would start looking for a good used 870.
I am going to try to find a ~20" barrel version.
What does one look for to be sure the shotgun is not worn out???
Thanks for helping a shotgun newbie.:D

Just look for the name, "Remington," on the receiver. :D
I'm sorry; JUST a wisecrack (a stupid crack?). I cast NO aspersions on anybody else or their guns.

Worn out 870s are scarcer than honest folk in Congress. Abused 870s are not. If an 870 shows no rust, dings or gouges inside and out, chances are it'll serve you well for decades.
The 870 TB here is closing in on 11K rounds since I bought it early in 2001. It was made in 1978, and I've not the foggiest notion how many rounds went through it prior to my purchase. Visible wear since I've owned it is limited to the mag tube. The bluing could stand a touchup.
Beater 870s, oft owned by agencies and depts and turned in on new ones, oft look like they've been through all three World Wars outside, and near new inside. These are great bargains in many cases, and candidates for upgrading and refinishing in bakeon paint, camo dips, or "Parkerizing". Or you can just let an old soldier show its scars.
HTH....

It's hard to wear out an 870.
