I called John today and ordered one of his 1998A1s. Must have chatted with him almost an hour. He's a fun guy to talk to. When does he find the time to build pistols?

The bad news is the gun probably won't be ready until next April or May. Also, prices are going up after the first of the year. I knew I should have ordered one of these last year.

Nothing down. John says he doesn't like to work on other people's money. If someone did bail on him, I'm sure he'd have no trouble finding another buyer for a gun.

The bad thing is, he doesn't lock the price for you. You will pay whatever he is asking when your gun is ready. You won't know how much it is until he tells you it's ready.

Yeah, I was a bit surprised to find out he wouldn't commit to a price on my order. I won't know until next spring how much they will be (and whatever he'll be deciding to raise his prices to). Any price you are given for the gun now, won't necessarily be the price you will pay when it's ready...

Lousy businessmen don't stay in business, much less do as well as Valtro.
It is a niche market and he plays it well. His niche customers don't care if the price goes up and they pay a little more. He offers SERVICE, something that is increasingly hard to find now-a-days.
