Question. Are collapsible stocks on AR-15's illegal for civilians.
And if so, why?

A pre 94 crime bill rifle can have a collapsible stock but not a post 94 crime bill rifle.

You can own a collapsable stock which has been rendered "non collapsable" by a pin though. Just for the look.

Question: Could you get a collapsable stock that was pinned at such a length where it makes your AR just slightly over the OAL restriction?

They are illegal because a bunch of do-gooders who want to outlaw all guns could not define "assault weapons" in any meaningful way. They therefore targeted guns that looked scary. They picked arbitrary cosmetic features with no regard for whether or not these features made the gun more lethal.

They outlawed bayonet mounts in the same law for the same reason. There was no rash of drive by bayonet lunges. What they want to do is demonize guns that have a military appearance and get people used to the idea that people don't "need"(whatever that means) military style weapons, that the only weapons civilians should have are for sporting or hunting.

Collapsing stocks are marginally useful for converting a full length rifle to a close quarters carbine. They don't turn the gun into some kind of unstoppable killing machine.

The AWB is one of the most abomidable laws past in recent years and I hope every day for its quick and timely demise on September 13th of next year.

loose the pistol grip and you can have one of the other named "evil" features

The law named a number of "evil features". You are allowed to have two of the evil features on a post ban semi-auto rifle. More than two features and you are guilty of manufacturing an assult rifle. However they are all OK if the rifle had the features prior to the ban (pre-ban rifle).
Pistol Grip
Detachable Magazine
Bayonet Lug
Flash Suppressor
Collapsable Stock

With the AR15 familiy of rifles and carbines you already have two of the evil features (pistol grip and detachable magazine), so on a post ban rifle you can't have any more of the evil features. As was mentioned on a pre-ban rifle you can have any or all of the features.

Don't like it ? Become politically active.

Not positive, but I think there's some question about whether the "pin" will make a post-ban collapsible legal.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm not really up on the AWB and the '94 Crime Bill. Are they the same?
I was going to tried to get up to speed on this by reading some articles on RKBA.com
I own some handguns, shotguns, and rifles(hunting) and I never thought that much about the AWB.
