Are the Maverick shotguns any good? I'm on a tight budget. I'll be using it for everything you can use a shotgun for.

Some will say good some will say bad. I am going to say its good for how much it costs. Just dont expect it to last forever. Someone else will chime that theirs has lasted forever though so be prepared for that as well.

95% of a Mossberg500 for 75% of the price. The stocks and barrels interchange. The only difference is the trigger group, and the method of attaching the foregrip to the bars that work the action (so a M500 foregrip won't work).

I personally prefer Mav88's over the M500 because I do not prefer the tang safety on the back of the receiver that the M500 has, I prefer the crossbolt safety on the trigger housing of the Maverick 88.

If I had both of them identically equipped on the rack side by side, at their respective average price points, I would take the Maverick any time.

YMMV.

The Maverick 88 is a very good shotgun. Its cheap, reliable, and the one I have can hold 7+1. Thats a whole lot of protection I can depend on. Get the security if you want home defense. If you want to kill birds get a Remington or something else.

Other then the barrel length, what is the differece between the all purpose field and 6-shot security models?

Essentially, no difference other than the "Model Name".

My Maverick 88 started out as a "Field" model, with the 28" Modified Choke barrel. It now is my 'HomeLand Security' shotgun, with the 18-1/2" cylinder-bore barrel.

Now, the "8-shot Security" models are different..longer magazine tube, and barrel attachment lug farther out from the receiver.

Maverick line are also kinown as "Mexican Mossbergs".
Parts are made in Mexico and assembled in Eagle Pass Texas.

The guns are decent but cost effective measures have been implemented.
You won't find a Maverick with a top tang safety, or an all metal trigger housing.
They come with a forearm asssembly that is exactly that, an assembly.
If you want to switch forearms you will have to buy a Mossberg made slide tube and retainer nut.

The good news is that all Mossberg made parts short of the trigger housings and safeties will interchenge with the Maverick made guns.

I keep reading that about the Maverick guns being mexican made guns and it's bunch of garbage. Perhaps the very first one's were as the early Mav's had a single action bar on them and a few other differences that the current guns don't.

I recently picked up a used Mav 88 and a Mossberg 500A(both 5 shots) at the same time in a local pawnshop, paid $225 for the pair. The Mav is basically new and as far as I can tell has never been fired. The 500 was used but not much.

I had both of them apart on the table, side by side, for cleaning and they were basically identical...right down to the TOOL MARKS on the bolts and recievers. Yep, these two guns were made with the same machine tooling. There is no perceptible difference in the feel of the actions on either gun and they shoot and perform basically the same. BTW these guns are ALL made in Texas these days, call Mossberg and ask, they will verify that as well.

Get a Maverick and don't sweat it, these guns are the best bargain going and not fall apart any sooner than a 500A would. The only reason I can see to take the 500 over an 88 is if you have an preference with the location of the safety or like wood more than synthetic stocks.

I posted a pic of my Maverick in your other thread. Honestly I like the tang safety on the 500 better than the Mavericks but it wasn't worth $80 extra to me. Other than this I am completely happy with my Maverick. I recently got a 28' barrel for it for skeet/trap shooting also.

I have the 20" barrel 7+1 model. For $198 I couldnt be happier! I have/had 2 other pump shotguns a winchester 1300 and an Ithaca DS police special...the maverick with hang with either of them. I like mine so much I'm going to pony up the $$$ and pick up the 28" barrel and try my hand at trap with it at my club this spring.

It was the first real gun I bought- as a HD long gun. Then I got into shooting it was so much fun. I have put about thousand or more rounds through it. No problems, I love the feel, I like it way more then my 870. it is the gun next to my bed. Get it.

According to this article, Mossberg barrels, triggers, and bolt assemblies are manufactured in Torreon, Mexico and then shipped across the border to Eagle Pass, TX to be assembled with the receivers and stocks which are produced in North Haven, CT.

Some errors of information has been posted...
First is the trigger group of the 500 lineup have been plastic for at least 20 years.
The other big error is the forestock thing! For a spell the Mav 88 had an integral forestock. But no longer. I have had my plastic stock off and a wooden 500 one on then back to the Mav 88 black one. Also some in other threads have said the Mav action tube is different length than a 500 but in actuality it was ALL Mossberg tubes were changed... it is a generation thing not a brand/model variation.

A friend recently bought an OEM aftermarket Mossberg 500 barrel, which came in a Mossberg clamshell pack. It had a sticker on the packaging that indicated manufacture in Mexico from US Steel.
