I have a single-shot barrel for a Stevens shot gun in 30-30 I bought it used tried to see how it shot at the range at 100 yards. I didn’t even hit the cardboard! I did get one or 2 about a foot high and 7 inches right after moving the rear sight up almost all the way. It has open sights. I moved the target back to the 50 yard marker and I have a 4 inch group 1 ft high and 7 inches to the left. Is it normal to have to have the wedge under the rear sight all the way to the front? If it was worn out would the shots be all over the place?

You moved the sights the wrong way. If the gun is shooting high, move the rear sight lower. If it is shooting to the left, drift the rear sight to the right.

Mongo is correct. Move the sights in the direction you want the point of impact to move.
