Im in the market for a new toy , Ive always wanted another 44 revolver but my delima is which one , the Ruger Blackhawk 44 mag w/the 10 1/2" barrel or the Taurus 444 Raging bull 44 mag w/the 8 3/8" barrell . Years ago I had a Taurus 44 with a , I think 11" barrell, and I loved the way it shot and I told myself that I was gonna replace that gun when I had a chance. Now that Ive got the chance a good friend of mine is telling me that the Ruger is a better gun but my heart is set on the Taurus. Does anyone have any input on these two guns and their performance? The gun will be used for hunting .

I don't know what a delima is. But the Ruger is generally aknowledged as the better gun. Heavier, built to take it.
I have some Buffalo Bore .44mag 340gr +P+. The box lists guns you can shoot it in. And the Taurus isn't one of them.

while I don't have any experience with either of these .44s, I can say this: while the Ruger may indeed be better than the Taurus in some aspects, it is not the gun you want. You want the Taurus. By your reference to this purchase as that of a "toy," I take it to mean that this is to satisfy a whim, not a need. You would be wise to keep separate someone else's reasoning, however thoughtful, and well intended, and your heart's desires.

Taurus quality control has improved greatly in the last few years. even so, if you're looking for longevity, i'd stick with the ruger. you could try the super redhawk if it's the double action you want too.

scrub the taurus off your list. they make a decent product, but thier customer service S U C K S ! ! ! ! ! i have two of their guns, and i WAS very happy with them. but now, no way, no how. if i EVER get mine fixed, i WILL be taking to the store where i bought it and trading it in. i would rather have a hi-point. they are ugly as sin, but at least you can shoot it.

I too am looking at a Taurus. I would like a dbl action in .44 mag for a side arm while hunting. I do own a Ruger SuperBH in .44 mag, but like a dbl better.
While Ruger is a great gun, I have only ever called their service department once, and it was HORRIBLE. I NEVER got a return call as told I would, and have never called them back. Sometimes it only takes one bad experience.
And, though I would buy Ruger again, I will NOT consider their service better than any other companies.

The Ruger is a fine single action revolver. I owned one of those legendary "3-screw" Super Blackhawks years ago and used it for hunting deer. Tough and accurate gun.

I traded it for this, and I absolutely LOVE this wheelgun. You simply cannot beat a S&W trigger, and hunting accuracy with a handgun is so dependent on a great trigger! My S&W 29-5 was new in 1989 and I've taken so many deer with this firearm . . . including THREE in rapid succession TWICE.

No way would I go back to the Ruger SB after shooting this Smith!

Good luck with your decision!

Yeah I narrowed it down to either a Ruger or a S&W 629. Im counting the blood banks Ill have to visit to pay for the S&W. I might be a little week for awhile but I think Ill be happy with the S&W 629.

Do what you must, but GET a S&W Model 29/629 with the original barrel configuration.
