It's a 5/16" - 24 nipple for #11 cap. It is not the same as a #11 musket nipple as they are too long for the hammer to strike. It is of the "Hot-shot" design which is undersized and I hate it. None of the typical sites show anthing like it (dixie, TGW, track of the wolf...et. al.) Does anyone have a place that sells it? Any info would be appreciated.

The barrel says Steve Zihn #1 under the stock, a .58 caliber heavy hawken style rifle. I bought it used and I'm not familar with his work or if it was a stripped nipple that was retapped with a larger one. I suppose I could have it rebreached but I don't want to invest that much into it.

I can get oversized up to .285" with a 28 pitch but mine is miked at .3124 almost exactly 5/16" with a gauged 24 pitch. I've tried the musket conversion nipples for #11 cap which fit in the breech plug great but are too tall for the hammer to hit even remotely square. I just catch a corner barely and they don't set off the cap.

5/16x24 is a legitimate nipple thread size; the equivalent metric size is M8x1 - they are identical to the 3rd decimal. Dixie sells several different ones; give them a call and see if one is the length you need.

You might also try Mountain State Muzzleloading (aka Cain's Outdoors) http://www.cainsoutdoor.com/, they manufacture a broad range of nipple sizes.
Think I just found one that will work, thanks to all for the information!

Steve Zihn #1? I'd love to see pics of that, wonder if its his first rifle! Steve is building me a hawken right now. What did yours set you back? Have you had a chance to shoot it since you got your nipples?

Soon after I started this thread I did a search for Steve's e-mail address and asked if it was indeed his first one. This was the email:

Hi Eric
Did you get it from Joe Williams?
I remember it well. I was 14 when i finished it. What do you wan to know about it?
it';s got a Green River Barrel in it with a 1-76 twist and .014" deep rifling. it has a lock I got from Dixie Gun Works in 1969. I made the stock. It's not as good as what I do now, but for a 14 year old's first muzzle loader, i thought it was pretty good. I killed 5 deer with it
:)

I was wondering if you kept any sort of records on you rifles as to what they were built with. I have your #1 Hawken-style rifle that is in 58 caliber. I bought it well used and cared for and just wanted to let you know that it shoots better than I do still after almost 39 years according to the date on the barrel, 1970...it's as older than I am by 8 years! I was just curious as to what was on it originally. Thanks, and sorry to pester you.

I just got a L&R adjustable hawken sight I'm going to brown up and put in. It had a TC Hawken front sight and a brazed riser on the rear of the original sight. It shot center of bull with 70gr of Pyrodex RS at 50 yards with a 6 o' clock hold. I'd like to have a better POA for hunting though. I took it after moose once but never saw tracks or droppings let alone a moose. We were stopped by the MNR (Ministry of Natural Resorces of Ontario) for a license check. One of the officers said he did the moose allocation for all of the Alneau peninsula (Lake of the Woods). He said there were about 200 moose. The Alneau is the size of Chicago.....:banghead:
