View Full Version : Range problem

I just got back from the range where I was shooting some Georgia Arms "canned heat" .45ACP 230gr FMJ. I was shooting my Kimber Ultra Carry II and Kimber Stainless Pro Carry II.

I went through 500 rounds. I had one FTF where the round hung up in the ejection port of the Pro Carry. I had 7 or 8 cases where the round chambered, but the pistol would not go into battery (about 1/16 of an inch from battery). This happened with both pistols, and putting the round back in the mag and trying again resulted in another failure to go into battery.

I suspect that this is an ammo problem, maybe a bulging case. Suggestions? Comments?

Sounds like the bullet wasn't seated deep enough.

I am not sure. I forgot to mention that I COULD get the weapon to go into battery by tapping the rear of the slide, and the round would fire normally.

Does it look normal beside another round. I bought some bulk stuff the otherday and one was dropped down much lower in the plastic than the others. Tossed it.

I had similar problems a few years ago when I was issued my Sig P220, esp. the part about not going into battery all the way. Try tightening your grip a bit. It may sound like a longshot, but limp-wristing was the cause of many of my firing problems. Even now with my Springfield EMP (1911 style 9mm.) I still suffer the occasional failure-to-feed if my grip isn't snugged up enough.
Hope this helps...

Those are reloads so you can expect a slight problem from time to time. It sounds like the OAL was just a little off, just slightly long. I know you should get 500 out of 500 that are correctly loaded but 7-8 out of 500 from a reloader isn't all that bad. I would call them and let them know it happened so they can tighten up their QC so they can avoid problems in the future.

Were all the malfuntions from the same magazine? The round might be popping up too soon and feeding ahead of the extractor instead of under it.

I will try to address:

1 As far as 'limp wristing' goes, I don't think so. Most of the failures were when loading the pistol from slide lock.

2 The rounds all LOOKED normal.

3 They were all from different magazines. I had 10 different magazines with me.

4 I am thinking that the suggestion of ArchAngel is the best bet. I don't have the rounds any longer, but I think there must have been something with the ammo, and OAL seems to fit as well as any other explanation.

Since my friends and I started rolling the rounds down a sheet of lexan (About 2" wide and about a foot long), we stopped this probem almost totally, as the bad rounds wobble. Most of them look ok, but they don't roll right. Some can be shot, one at a time, but most just get tossed.

Ammo not fitting completely in the chamber properly, incorrect case size, overall ammo length or maybe extractor having problems grabbing on to the rim.

When was the last time you changed the recoil spring? How many rounds?

I don;t think it is a pistol problem. What are the odds of two different weapons having the same malfunction?
