Get a recent copy of Shotgun News, there are many sources for 7.62x39 mags. If you use the internet, www.k-var.com has them but you pay a premium price. The gunshows will be about 20% cheaper. You can usually get all you want for around $12 for steel 30 rounders.

As far as I know, all 7.62x39 AK mags are the same, and will fit in any AK clone.
The best AK clone is rumored to be the Robinson Arms VEPR series. The SAR-1 is good too.

I have a SAR 1. It is a 2001 model. The newer the model the better the quality. The SAR 1 is not the highest quality AK variant out there but it is just as reliable as any. The SAR 1 is the best representation available of the AKM. Thats what you want. Minimal maintenance. I clean mine after each case of $75.00 Wolf ammo. Mags are cheap, ammo is cheap, accessories are cheap, whats not to like. You must remember that this is not a target rifle but it is one reliable, durable weapon. Incidentally, any AK mag in 7.62x39 will work in this gun. If you want an absolutely devestating AK round get the SAR 2; its 5.45 and is very impressive. The SAR 3 is 5.56 and is the poorest example of the AK. Good luck.

SAR-1 is arguably the best "bang for the buck". Not always pretty, but they go bang every time, and they're reasonably accurate. Magazines for a 7.62x39 AK can be found all over the place. www.cheaperthandirt.com (Cheaper Than Dirt) has fine E German mags for under 10 bucks.
I have one, and love it.

Well...that link doesn't seem to work, and I can't edit it. The URL is right though, it's ... http://www.cheaperthandirt.com
Good folks to deal with.

Classic Arms has new in the wrap AK mags for $7.95ea. when you buy 10 or more. I got a bunch from them awhile back for 10/$75. They were brand new, in the wrap Bulgarian mags. They no longer have a web page and you have to call them. They advertise in the SGN just about every issue and have a bunch of other stuff, including rifles. They are on pg.127 of the Oct. 1 issue. Their phone nuber is, 704.684.0650 m-f 9-5 est

You can usually find great deals on AK mags at CDNN (http://store.yahoo.com/cdnn/ak471.html). I've bought quite a few of the new steel Bulgy mags for $9.99, and also some of the used Soviet mags for $6.99. I've been pleased with what they sent, and if I recall correctly, they have economical flat-rate shipping.

Aim Surplus, www.aimsurplus.com, has 30-rounders for 7.95. I recently ordered some of these from them. As good a deal as any I've seen.

I'll second RicVa's AIM Surplus recommendation. Good prices, and always excellent service. While you're browsing there, be sure to also check out their Polish synthetic 7.62 x 39 30-round magazines.
Virtually all 7.62 x 39 AK magazines will fit the SAR-1, except the 10-round low-capacity varieties that are designed for the WASR-10 rifles.
Speaking of WASR-10's, if you're looking to get into the AK habit with a minimum of cash outlay, you might consider a Romanian WASR-10 (http://www.centerfiresystems.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CSI&Product_Code=AKAGUN22&Category_Code=AKGUN) from Centerfire Systems. At $159.97, they're a heck of a deal. The fit and finish is about the same as SAR-1s (rough but reliable!). As configured from the factory, they only accept 10-round magazines, but you can always convert them to accept standard hi-cap AK mags later on.

I bought 2 East German 30-round mags at different times.
The first one has a VERY tight fit but I can get it inserted (guess I need to grind on it a bit).
The second one is loose and flops side to side. :scrutiny:
I am going to see if I can take my SAR-1 to the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot and see if the vendors will let me check them for fit before I purchase them.
I am assuming they should not flop side to side much yet be reasonable easy to insert if you were in a hurry!

Ditto all the comments on the SAR1. I have one as well. Cheap, lots of fun, reliable, and low maintenance. Any AK47 mag will work.
Not real accuate though, but who cares for this kind of rifle. It is the sledge hammer of assault rifles.
I would not hesitate to recommend a SAR1, except I understand that Century is not importing them anymore. Glad I got my 2002 model just before.

IIRC, www.tapco.com has a deal for four 40-rd'ers and pouch for $55.00. Also a few other accessories as well...

I'll second that. I bought 10 30 rounders, all worked perfectly and the total cost was only $70 or so shipped

Recently bought 50 Polish mags from AIM New in the Wrap for $6.50 apiece. They were brand new in the paper and beautiful.
In the past I bought a bunch of used Romanian mags from them, little finish, few rust spots but I want to say they were about $5 apiece. All have worked fine with the exception of one that had a thick locking tang, four or five licks with a file and it locks up great. AIM is good people!
