Hi all,
I have a feeling that the answer is no, but I wanted to ask just to make sure. I've got a Ruger Old Army and I was wondering if anybody made a black powder rifle that could make use of the same .457 ball. I understand that a rifle uses a patch so the bore size must account for that, which would mean I'd need a .46 bore correct? Anybody know of any out there? Thanks.

You'd need a .467 or .470 rifled bore, which would be a custom made barrel.

Save your ducats and you can always have Bobby Hoyt (Der Freischutz Shoppe) reline a barrel for you. It's probably $150.

You can shoot conicals in the Ruger, and use a Hornady sabot to shoot the same bullet in a .50 caliber muzzleloading rifle.

I have no idea why you'd want to, but you could.:)

That's a great idea.
MMP also has orange .50 sabots that will fit .457 - .458 bullets.
And a .457 round ball should also work in it.

I have owned an ROA of one sort or another for 30 years. I bought a 50 cal hawken and a minie ball mold. I don't need to use the same ball for each and it's getting harder and harder to get an inexpensive rifle in anything, but 1:28 or tighter twist, which ain't worth a toot for round ball, anyway. A Lee cast 360 minie shoots good in my hawken.

Seems like a Lyman is about the main choice in 1:66 or 1:48 twist anymore. Everyone's gone sabot bonkers. :rolleyes: If you fire this round ball out of a 1:28 twist, I can't guarantee it'll wind up within 50 feet of a 100 yard backboard. :rolleyes: Rifling rate matters.

What size balls are used in the 1858 revolving rifles, such as the one made by Uberti? I'm pretty sure it's either .454 or .457...

Most use .454 but a .451 sometimes would get the job done in those carbines, the chambers are usually around .450 in the Uberti's with Pietta's being around that as well, although I would still use a .457 in them cuse that's what I cast.

Sounds like the sabot is the way to go on this project. I can use the Old Army conicals in a pinch but still use a standard .50 rifle for all of its benefits. Thanks folks, made me a custom rifle for almost no money.

I tried it for fun once in my Enfield musketoon and yep, he's right.
