I probably shouldn't ask this; .45 to 10mm?

Hello everyone,
I had an interesting conversation with a guy who lives down the street from me. According to him, you can take a M1911A1 pistol, change out the barrel, magazine, and recoil spring, and fire 10mm through it. Now, something is telling me this guy is pulling my leg, but he's been around a while. Says that the breech face on the slide is appropriate for the cartridge and that the extractor will still work.
True or not?
You'd think that I wouldn't have to ask these questions by now......

A shooting buddy of mine recently bought a new slide for his 1911 in 10mm. It works GREAT! But then, the entire top end is all you need for a caliber change ;)

Another possibility is to use the new 400 CorBon barrels. From what I hear, Ed Brown makes the best ones. The 400 Corbon is a standard 45 cartridge with a necked down .40/10mm bullet. The barrels are interchangeable with the 45 barrels in 1911 pistols. I tried one from a friend about 1/2 a year ago in my Kimber, and it worked fine. I didn't convert, but was curious on how to use it.
Using these barrels requires no changes in recoil springs, magazines, etc. 400 Corbon ammo can match all but the hottest 10mm loads (but then again, the hottest loads are recommended only for hunting). It's catching on, but then again, renewed interest in the 10mm is back from major manufacturers like Kimber. Who knows.
Just a thought from the newbie,
Tony

I'd rather re-configure a 1911 to fire 45 super. I've read here somewhere it's a ballistic equal to the 10mm. ;)

The guy is an outright liar. You can't convert a .45 ACP 1911 without replacing the entire top end, and probably the ejector.

You can rechamber a .40 1911 for 10mm. Change out the spring weights and you're done.
10mm ammo feeds fairly well outta about 1/2 of my .45acp mags. It seems kinda arbitrary as to which work and which don't.

A quick look of Texas Ammo's 10mm vs .45 Super finds that the ME is about equivalent in each of the three loadings available, with the .45 bullets being heavier of course. Range was @ 615-695ft-lbs
Double Tap's 10mm runs in the 690-760ft-lb range.

Yeah, but they "cheated" on the ballistics by using a Springfield with a 6" barrel to get the .45 Super numbers. The numbers for Double-Tap and Cor-Bon's hunting ammo are all from 4.6" barreled 10mm Glocks. :D

Regarding DT ammo, ...
... all but 2 of DT's 10mm loads produce muzzle energies above 700fpe.

And even then the (forthcoming) 220gn FP and 200gn XTP-HP are knocking on the door at 680fpe and 694fpe, respectively.
Adding to what Sean mentioned about barrel lengths, Texas Ammo's 10mm stats are measured from a 5" barrel.
