Range finders, Can't see the actual distance stated . . .

Nikkon 440 sometimes finds 390, never seen 440. If I were to get a 800+ or whatever, will it See the distance? At this point I have to move the range finder around in order for it to find something that it can READ and actually give me a yardage. What gives? :confused:
