Is this not a work of art? I mean come on, I would just like to pull the trigger one time. Come on, just once :)

The top round is a .50BMG for comparison!

One would be enough!
79 caliber...
I saw some .600 Nitro Express brass today. 20mm makes them look like a midgets.

We've a friend with the "Henry Bowman Special" - Solorthern (sp?)
I've touched one off & it's no big deal, with proper brake.
The Wife (she's 5', 100 lbs - the rifle was a foot longer & 15+ lbs heavier than her) shot a few - no biggy.
Dialed in, they're around the kicker of a 12 gauge with a heavy turkey load - if that - & really a bit less.
Actually, about a stout 30-06, if that.
& there IS something about a 2-mile gun to be able to play with .... ;)
Her fave was the 37MM though. Had to have an extra "kicker" on the stand to prevent the recoil from boilin' her offa the stand .....smokin' a brick wall at 600 yds or so .... now, that's a kicker.
too
Properly braked 20mm is no big deal though - other than the long-range capabilities ....
Really.
Although it [B]IS[/I] so very way cool - no doubt. ;)
& if'n ya thought a .50 cal was a hoot.

Neat. So are these civilian legal in the US?

they must be, a friend of mine has one, says it is 6 feet long, weighs 265 lbs, has a scope the size of two tomato juice cans.., he also says it is deadly accurate to 5 miles........

They are legal in many states, it is a destructive device by law. Any ammunition that has 1/4 oz explosive or incindiary material is also a destructive device requiring it's own transfer.
While in Bosnia I had the chance to look over the Croatian 20mm (second and third picture), neat design. It was made specifically to destroy the thermal sight on the Yugoslav 84 MBT.
Labgrade, I envy you having the ability to shoot a 20 but I think you are a bit more than just optimistic about it's range. It's velocity and ballistics make it far inferior to the .50 BMG and many lesser rounds.

check out the hydraulic recoil dampners in the Denel 20mm:

On the second and third photos, which are apparently a different gun from the first one...
What is the long tube on top of the rifle that extends over the buttstock?
I thought it was a sighting scope, but how would you use it?
Is it part of the recoil damping system? I simply can't tell...

Rocket launcher?

That tube is a venturi. A portion of the propellent gasses are diverted off and sent through a high pressure port to offset the recoil. Without it the recoil would be nasty as it is much smaller and lighter than all the other 20mm rifles.

Awesome! I want one!
Anybody know what the backblast is like on that beast?

While playing with a search engine and family history, I stumbled upon

Probably ballistically inferrior to the 20mm, but then, you can't double a singleshot.

I fired the South African 20mm. in January 2001, when I visited my parents there. (I did some development work for a number of companies in the arms industry in the 1980's, and have retained contacts and friends there, so I was able to visit an industry "open day" for potential customers.) The recoil is interesting - a sort of double push, from the hydraulic dampers, but quite manageable. Interestingly, the 20mm. barrel is intended for use against targets such as aircraft, lightly-armored vehicles, etc. For anti-personnel sniper use, another barrel is supplied, this one in the Russian 14.5mm. Degtyarev heavy machine-gun round (about .57"), which the designers felt offered even better terminal ballistics than the Browning .50 BMG round. The machine-gun round actually out-ranges the cannon round...
The gun comes with both barrels, adapters, etc. Very interesting piece of equipment.

Hmmm, interesting info preacherman. Double push recoil, now that's an experience.... It would be an interesting sight to see that double 4 bore pulling both barrels at the same time..... That might actually sell some tickets :)

Jake 98c/11b,
I'll defere to your better judgement here. I really know little about the 20 other than it was awsome to crank it off. Seemed to hit with much more authority than the .50, but we were well with either's range.
A MPI round into an opened propane tank neatly covered by a closed-window wrecker makes you think it'd do something at 2 miles anyway.

what are the velocity numbers for this round ?
