Tomahawk
January 14, 2009, 08:11 PM
Today I received a Cold Steel Rifleman's tomawk. Pretty beefy with a set screw in the head. Got to throwing it and I was pretty amazed at how natural it threw. Out of 10 tries I stuck it 8 times at around 10 to 15 feet. Night was falling so I ran out of time. Does anyone have or have tried any of the Cold Steel tomahawks? I was skeptical because of the made in Taiwan, China ,etc. Thanks-Rev

I have a cold steel trail hawk I received as a gift.
I thought it was a pile of junk steel and wood and not even as good as a cheap hardware store hatchet until I actually used it.
When I'm car camping or just weekending, I'll take it along to cut wood and whittle shaving from pine hearts. The hammerish backside works fine for driving stakes and what-not.
Most recently, I put a big chunk of beef leg bone on the counter and the trail hawk split it down the middle without much ado. One whack.
I keep it by the bed in my array of Just In Case stuff.
I like it fine.

Throwing a hawk is just mathmatics.
It is as easy to back up for more distance for two or 3 flips, and or throwing so the hawk hit handle up by holding the hawk backwards before you throw it.
Making the handle as long as your arm is from elbow to wrist can help more.
I remain curious as to where you see this norse hawk?

This is something that I made with suff that was around the house. I may not look pretty, but it works very good. I had a piece of leaf spring that I soaked in vinegar to remove the rust. It is hafted with inner tube laces tightly wrapped around and a little J B weld to hold it in. The handle is ironwood. It grows wild where I live. It does not look pretty and I tried to make it look primitive. I have struck several things with it. Mostly trees. The hawk held firm no matter how hard I hit them. It is very light and it penetrated a hog skull to the hilt. I will try to post more pictures if I can. Again I am a newbie compared to some of you guys, but I hate sitting around watching TV. I would rather be outdoors anytime! You guys take care!

Quite with the trees... geeze.... go build a target block. You need a target block, probably a big stump, and 3 poles for legs.
With the biggest drill you can muster drill two holes under the edge of the stump, and the last on an angle in the rear face of the stump. Get a buddy to help instert the last longer pole.
The term Ironwood varries widely, so no one is going to know which of the 'ironwoods' it is you have used very well.
I know of one with shaggy bark, another with the world nastiest thorns, yet another will bark smoother than beech, looking like a bodybuilder is wearing skin tight clothing. I understand there is about 100 kinds of ironwoods.
As you can see if you can get deer raw hide. Maybe that will work. If you have another hunk of spring go select another sapling, and chisel a snug fitting hole in it and fit another head in that hole. Then go away for atleast one whole growing season, and let the sapling tighten the whole thing up for you.
You came pretty close to a small viking axe with this effort.

I to believe in protecting trees. I should have said dead dried up trees. There is alot of them here where I am at as it is a very arid desert area. I will try the hawk throught the sapling technique. I have seen pictures of it, and I am still working on the deer rawhide. I am sending a picture of the ironwood in my area. Thanks for the info.

The pic is too small for me to see well, but you can bank on I never laid eyes on a tree like that one anyway..... very sceneic never the less. I live in the North Eastern rain forest. Sometime in the last week of Feb (this month) I will be tapping sugar maple to make maple syrup, which is the first crop of Spring/Summer. There will be several feet of snow on the gorund when this happens here.
I am a hunter, but I am conservitive in the true meaning, which to me means don't kill what you don't eat. Not that you would even if you could do this one... I saw 2 men kill a swarm of bees, just because they could. The bees landed on a steel swing set, and formed a big ball of several thousand bees.
I am not sure why the bees did this, but I believe they were getting ready to create a new wild nest. These 2 men who I consider fools and total know nuthins set the BBQ grill ablaxe and dragged it with a rope to be under the swing set and did terrible damge to these bees. These 2 fools acted like heros while doing this, and had no clue what so ever that these bees are something man kind needs to produce produce!
With out the honey bee there is very little else to pollinate plants man eats.
I agree had you said dead trees, I would have left the comment alone. I see 'people from away' come to my rainforest and hack up the land. Some are weekend tourists, while others move here to stay.
Over the past years I have seen groves of trees cut, leaving behind only paper birch, and a home built. It seems no one understands these paper birch must have shade and lots of moisture, so every one of these trees now exposed to more sun and dryier soils die with in 5 years.
I don't kill snakes and I don't kill spiders either, unless they are in a place where they can't be moved. I can tell you I am personally not happy with a spider called Brown Recluse, but still I don't wattonly kill them.
Man is a foolish animal.

I recently received my 2 CS Trailhawks. I sanded, steel wooled, and put tung oil on the haft. I filed the eye of the hawk also. They do throw great and they hold an edge. Still like my CS Riflemans Hawk too.

Well yeah I can't say I blame you for killing widders.. I killed the last brown recluse i encountered too, but alas too late to do me any good.
In all though it is best to leave nature do what it does when you can.
I have encountered rattlers and left them be, because it was as easy as killing it, and no where near houses. It is their land too.
I would be interested in how many ninja moves complete with screams before hand were needed to preform the deed though? :D
I can almost predict "NONE"..:what:

Well, I can't say I've killed many spiders, I haven't seen one in YEARS. Apparently they don't like -40 degree weather. Go figure.
Before you envy me too much for my lack of spiders, the nearest tree I could try to cut down with any kind of axe is so far away I'd have to fly to get to it.

February 8, 2009, 05:55 PM
alaskanativeson, Well we get -40 below, have both trees and spiders.. I got bit by some puny spider last week, SOB bit me 3 times on my left hand and had moved his house into one of my work gloves. What ever kind this one was wasn't like that Brown Recluse though, and a good thing for it.
I hope that -40 crap is gone, as I am settin up to go sugarin soon. To do that I burn about 1 cord of dead white pine in about 6 hours. That boils off about 40 gallons of sap to 1 in that time.
I should have me head examined because i could buy a gallon of the stuff for 50 bucks, which would be a heck of a lot easier, but I don't.

Macmac,
Wow, cold and trees? Must be nice. I love the cold, miss the trees. NH is definitely on my "to do" list. I'm sure you get a lot warmer in the summer than we do, the spiders just don't like it here. I don't blame them, I don't really like it too much either. I like many of the people though.
Speaking of 'hawks, I think I'm going to look for a few historical pieces. Something from Colonial times would be a nice display piece.

MacMac,
Good choice with the metal roof, you would be living in a crater without it!
Macmac
February 9, 2009, 07:29 PM
Kevin?? ok to call you that I hope.. Just call me mac it's easier and more true.. that is just the machineshop here, and thankfully a 12 12 pitch on one side. The other side needs some attendance from time to time as there is a shed roof off the other side. Not a big deal really, not compared to the barn with out near to a 12 12 pitch.
And then there is the pine shed which is a must do each time..
The crater is just 6 miles south to dead center, and once i lived in it at dead center.
Not many people understand there were volcanoes in NH once, but there were. The one I mention now is a 6 miles diameter base, which is a fair size circle since this one is one of the few real ring dikes in the world as we know it.
No one really knows, but it is said this one would have towered over Everest, at some 44,000 feet! That would be one big hill in my book.
And yes we do get snow and lots of it. It gets cold too, and sometimes colder than -50 below in some years, just not this one.
Last year and this year as well many people 'from away' either found, or will find craters as you intended it.
There was more snow last year than this, but winta' ain't done here by anymeans, so thar's no tellin'. Winter can be beat and we can still get a 2 foot storm in May. Just can't say what's what sometimes.
I know that pic is out of focus, but I still like it. It has everything except spiders! LOL

Mac,
Allright, you can call me Kevin, it is my name after all (LOL).
I want to build me a big barn/shop here pretty soon.
Have to finish putting up the greenhouse first (large 40 by 16 footer).
I can store all the equipment in one end of the greenhouse untill we can build the other building.
You seem like my kind of friend (If you can see past my sometimes over the top libertarian/survivalist views.)
The scary part about winter here in Oklahoma is that just a little bit of ice and/or snow freaks everyone out and they all go crazy.
We have enough food and supplies for half the winter, and enough firewood cut, stacked and cured to heat the house and cook for three years, but most people can't live comfortably without electricity and transportation for more than a week.

Had a hawk in the Nam, all this talk of hawks is motivating me to try and make one.
No snow here, a flurry shuts the city down and people drive into the ditches. coldest is about 30, Having been transplanted from Mass I dont miss it.

No, man is the snake's greatest enemy. The snake is but a snake, and can do nothing but be snakey. Man can be more, but usually chooses to be less. Go figure.
Snakes know only hungry, tired, fear and contentment. You cannot offer a snake rest or contentment, and generally you're too big to be food. Thus, he fears you.

Doc. I'll keep ya posted I am going to set up my forge this Spring after sugarin. I got a mess of How To collected for fairing out hawks. My aim is to make some nice and fancy pipe hawks, but I don't plan to start making them exactly that way for for the 10 of so, since they will all be lessons. Maybe by 11, I can mess about and create something sharp and dainty, but I'll just have to see what happens.
There isn't a good way to not take the lesson steel gives out, and cutting corners even if cut over ignorance will always show up later. Steels are just honest..

Welcome to THR!
If you'd like to post a picture, you can either attach a smaller picture directly to a post, or you can put the letters IMG in brackets on either side of the direct URL of a picture on a hosting site such as Photobucket or Flickr. So, your image would look like [img]www.webaddressofyourpichere[/img, but be sure to add that last bracket at the end of your 2nd img.
