For those of you that keep a firearm close, whilst you sleep, how do you keep in secured? Also, what else do you keep bedside ie. flashlight, phone, etc.

1911 45 acp. Secured? Not at all, but rather ready to be unleashed; sitting in the dresser drawer, an arms' reach away, in its pouch, in condition 1. It goes to the safe when I leave for work where it cannot go. A couple of flashlights close also. Phone in the bedroom on the wife's side of the bed - she'll call 911.

My wallet with keys on top, cell phone next to it. G-19 in the drawer. Surefire G2 LED right next to the alarm clock.

Thinking of getting one of those electronic safes that you can unlock with your four fingers on top putting in the code. I don't trust myself with the gun on top the dresser, I leave it in the drawer. I've been known to sit straight up and hold entire conversations in my sleep so I'm a little wary of what else I might do with loaded and unsecured gun right next to my head.

NO Small Children.

Right now:

-Three 15 round 10 mm Glocks with night sights
-One tactical fashlight
-One headlamp
-One tactical knife
-One AK with tactical light and laser

I should put a sign on the door. Something like:

If you are looking for excitement, come on in. I don't know how everyone will fare but one thing is for sure, the bullets will fly and there will be blood shed. If you're just looking to steal some stuff, the next house will be easier! I'm sure of it.

We have a biometric time clock at work that clocks you in and out via fingerprint, and it never works correctly. Maybe the safes are better, but I'd be nervous that I wouldn't be able to get my gun out in time if I needed it.

I live alone and in a very small apartment, so I keep mine in the bedside table drawer +1 (condition 1). If someone comes through my drawer I would need to bring it into action quickly. Eventually it will probably end up with a TLR-1 or something of the sort on it while not at the range or being carried. Cell is always on my nightstand while I sleep.

I keep my H&K USP 40 S&W under my pillow in a "Pillow Holster". It's padded and I never feel the weapon, just know it's there. If anyone is interested use Google and search "Pillow Holster". I have had it about a month and am very satisfied, wasn't really comfortable fishing around in a nightstand drawer if the need arose.

Maybe you are a more sound sleeper than I am, but I would much rather fish around in a nightstand that does not ever move than to fish around in a pile of pillows (although your wife may not put 900 pillows on the bed like mine does :scrutiny:) that may shift during the night, to find my pistol. I keep a 1911 with night sights in the same drawer, oriented the same way, with a Streamlight TL2 and a reload next to it. Nothing else in the drawer. I know exactly where it is no matter how disheveled the pillows get :D.

YMMV.

Surefire 6p, with my carry gun in it's holster on the bedside table under a towel (currently a Beretta 9000s).

If my daughter is here (shared custody) I'll either have the keys to the gun locker in the closet next to the light or the carry gun with a trigger lock in a box under the bed.

I use a 3-number combination lock that I set so I can open in the dark by just turning one dial.

It's bolted down by the head of my bed. When I'm sleeping it's unlocked for quick retrieval of either a 12 ga. shot gun - 22 - 380 - or 9mm pistols. (I hope to be adding a 45 Rock Island soon).

On the floor by my head is a regular size flashlight. My cell phone is on the dresser at the foot of the bed but the wife has hers by her head. If anything would happen she would be dialing while I'm addressing the situation at hand.

Also my son has a 40 S&W M&P in his room and he will be mounting the pistol safe we gave him for Christmas in his closet by his head. His is operated by a push button (battery operated) lock or with a key (if the battery would die).

Both my kids shoot better than me nowadays so I've become a bit more lenient in where, and how, I leave my firearms.

I've got a set of twin HKs protecting our household: one upstairs (where I frequently fall asleep watching a game) and one downstairs in the nightstand next to the bed.
Equipment includes (2) HK USP45 Tacticals with spare 12-round mags. Both include night sights, M2 UTLs, and flash surpressors with serrated edges. Cell phone is always close at hand with spare Surefires on both sides of the bed.

Thinking about one of those Coach Gun 12 gauges to mount over the bedroom door. I know they only have two shots, and don't have the distinctive "racking" noise, but they sure look cool.

I have an uncle mike's holster strapped to an uncle mike's duty belt with amo dump pouch and a flash light. If something goes bump in the night, I strap the duty belt over my PJ's...

Edit -

In light of EXPVIDEO's Remark, I thought it wise to say I am serious about the duty belt. I believe in having a holster so that you can holster the weapon without putting it down and getting caught without it or something. The duty belt happens to make it fast to strap on... Also their are plenty of pouches for that kind of belt that gives you access to things like lights / cell phone or whathaveyou.

I keep a SA XD40 w/night sites w/full clip and chamber and a maglight on my side of the headboard. the cell phone is in the middle, so either one of us can grab it. The holster mounted to the bed frame's an excellent idea, I think I'm gonna use that. In a corner of the livingroom is a 12ga, full mag., mt chamber. I put masking tape over the muzzle to keep dust out. It's hidden, but easily accessable. There will be a loaded 20ga on my wife's side of the bed by this weekend. Our alarm system consists of an english springer and a pit bull/ lab cross outside and a pair of boston terriers inside. Just about anything will set off the outside alarm, coyotes, coons, wild turkeys, etc. When the inside alarm goes off, we pay attention. The sherrif is 15 mi away and 20-30 min to respond, so we need to take care of ourselves. I've had a couple of thefts over the years (livestock, tools) and my wife found somebody snooping through the garage a couple years ago( he ran out the back door got in his car and was long gone before LE showed up). It doesn't matter where you live.

I'm surprised at the lack of Gun Vaults discussed here. IMO they are well worth the money. I got mine for $90 which is roughly same amount as enough ammo for a good day of shooting.

Granted, I have kids in the house so I'm sensitive to keeping 'em locked up. But Gun Vault's slogan is absolutely correct- "from secure to armed in seconds". I can have the safe unlocked and the gun in my hand in about 1.5 seconds and don't ever have to worry about my four-year-old finding it and causing disaster. I think the trick is using a combo that is easy to punch in under stress. Something that comes naturally to you.

I also keep a Mossberg Pursuader between the bedframe and the box spring hidden behind the 'lovely' bed skirt my wife picked out. Shells are in the Gun Vault behind the CW45.

Just my two cents.

NO KIDS (For another few months)
Usually:
5" GP100 with a few speed strips or my 1911 in condition 1 on my nightstand, depending on what I carried last

Always:
18" 870 with 6 rounds of 3" 000 in the tube, empty chamber, and 4 slugs in the Speedfeed stock.

I'm getting a gun vault as soon as the kid is about to start being independently mobile. The 870 should be safe till it gets a little older, then I haven't decided what I'll do with it. They'll have to be pretty determined to press the slide release, rack a round into the chamber and take the safety off--which I can do in a second or two.

I keep a Glock 22 .40 with a crimson trace laser and a tak light on the rail. I have 3 kids in the house from ages 1 to 12 so I HAVE to keep all my firearms in the safe unless its on me or beside me while I sleep and its not in plain view. my bed frame has a little place, a hole if you will, in each corner where the matress isnt square and the frame is so I stuck a nice firm holster in that place so my pistol slides right into it and the sheet covers it up. I can reach it without moving from where I lay. that way it cant be seen so the kids wont go touching if they come into the room while im asleep or an intruder couldnt see to grab if there was such a situation. here is a pic of what I mean. maybe this will help if yu have kids and want to keep a gun by your side while you sleep and keep it safer then just setting it on the nightstand.

in the 3rd pic the gun is in the holster and covered up by the sheet. just FYI

Everytime I use it, Hoover dam calls up from 100 miles away and tells me to turn the thing off, I'm blowing out their turbinesLOL I could set it up on the shelf over the bed, splice in a toggle switch and have the switch next to the side of the bed. You might want to try turning that on after your eyes have gotten completely accustomed to the dark - after you've been in the dark for a few hours. It will probably end up somewhat blinding you as well. Just set your alarm to wake you up in the middle of the night and try it sometime.

My bedside contains 2 mini mag lights, one with a clear LED bulb and lense and one with a red lense. Either a Beretta 92fs and a spare mag, or a Rock Island 1911 with spare mag. Both are loaded full with one in the chamber. I also keep a machete and loaded 12 gauge. I live alone with few visitors, so I don't really worry about kids finding them.
Oh and a Ka Bar. Did I mention i have a lot of junk in the bedroom? LOL

Bedside table has a nice colorful towel protecting the wood. On this towel rests my SA XD45 condition 1 with TLR1 resting next to my Fenix two cell light. I don't remember exactly how bright the Fenix is but as I recall it is over 200 lumens. On the wifes side she has her makarov and telephone. At foot of bed is our four legged alarm that barks us awake when the intrusion alarms get slept through (it happens, believe me).

I keep a 1911 with a tr-1 on it in the bedside table in condition one. A P3-AT with spare mags in an old victorian cashbox on top of the bedside table. And my cell phone plugged in to the charger in front of the cashbox. I also keep my attack beagle concealed underneath the sheets as a last resort:).

Para 10-45 Limited beside my bed, with an extra magazine and LED flashlight. Fully loaded magazine, but none chambered. (Double stack magazines, 10 shots in each.)

8 feet away, an EAA Witness .45 with a full magazine, and a Dan Wesson .357 hid in the sock and underwear drawers.

Also have a SKS tucked away in a corner almost behind my dresser. 50 or so rounds on stripper clips.

Also have a ferocious 13 lb lap-cat that will meow anyone into wanting to leave. My 90 lb boxer/german shepherd mix won't mess with Roc (the cat). :neener:

In my case, cell phone on the headboard, pistol next to it--full mag in, empty pipe, safety on.

The safety coming off is a second-nature result of grabbing it, and slingshotting a round in doesn't take any longer.

I'm on the second floor, and sleep with my door long--if I have time to grab the gun, I have time to rack it.

If I have a couple extra seconds, I have the Ak and a full magazine under the bed. If I can, I want that big, scary, black gun and the loud racking noise.

I have heard increasing stories about felons / perps wearing body armor. While that might frustrate my .357 depending on the vest rating, #4 buck to the face would handle that threat...

Just thought I would through in a touch of the dramatic.

Glock 17 and small but very bright flashlight in the top droor of my nightstand. Pump 12ga in the corner leaning against the dresser. Only people in the house is me and my girlfriend... no kids.

The only time I remove the loaded guns is when one of my friends from out of town comes to visit and brings his kids. In that case the shotgun gets put in the safe, the G17 stays in the night stand but I remove the mag and put it across the room in the top droor of my dresser under clothes.

2 barking dogs (Blue Heeler) outside the house

1 non barking dog (Rottweiler) inside the house.

.45, cocked and locked, 2 extra mags, and .357 in quick access safe in night stand.

Mossberg 500 12 gauge, chamber empty, mag full of 00 buck in push button safe next to night stand.... AR, full mag, SKS, full mag. (gotta store the mags somewhere, right;))

Redheaded Irish women next to me. (not pregnant, but going through menopause.... my lord, I hope she doesn't read this)

LOL Let 'em. Anyone comming into my home that needs to be shot, will be shot until they fall down and stop threatining my life. Wether their wearing body armor, a t shirt or a pink tu-tu, I don't care. After that I'll sit there and watch them roll around on the floor and gasp for breath. The local police are roughly 20 to 30 minutes away from my property IF they can even find it, so they should be able to get in plenty of gasping and rollingLOL
The question than becomes, what do you if their wearing body armor and not completely incapicitated, i.e. dead? But, their not AS MUCH of a threat as before? Are you legally obligated to run from your own home as soon as their down but not out? Can you legally justify a headshot 20 minutes later cause he happened to twitch threatiningly? LOL
Ok, so these are all pretty specific and things like this need to be taken by a case-by-case basis, but it's still interesting to think about. Not sure, is this off topic enough to warrant a new thread?
Good dramatic touch MBT!

Glock 17 in a little bed-side holster I made. Covered up by the bedspread during the day but very accessible. No kids even in the family, let alone the house, so I only lock it up when I am leaving town...unless I take it with me...not my everyday carry anymore due to size. Just load it with 17 rounds of 147gr HydraShok and don't bother to top it off at the bed-side. If it goes out, I sometimes top it off for a total of 18.

If you use a handgun, it's good to keep it stuffed between the mattress and box spring with the handle sticking out so you can grab it real quick. That's what I used to do when my handgun was my go-to gun for home defense, but now I keep a shotgun leaning up against the wall right next to my bed.

P85 - one mag loaded with 147gr HP's
M500 - 5 TAP 00 buck

All guns unloaded and locked in my safe. I can get to the safe, have it unlocked and firearm loaded quickly if needed. My home was broken into shortly before I bought it so I can't say it'll never happen.

Kids are 10 and 8.

Walther P99 AS .40 sits on top shelf in walk-in closet, mag stoked w/hp's, chamber empty. Two steps from bed, closet door left open at night. LED flashlight next to gun. Glock 34, S&W 910S, Taurus PT1911 and CMMG AR-15 all locked in digital code safe in same closet, each with a loaded magazine set next to gun.

The p99 rides in a cheap uncle mikes IWB on my hip while I'm home. Only the wife knows it's on me.

I keep a Makarov IJ-70 on the night stand. Full magazine (8), empty chamber. I am the only one in the house strong enough to rack a round so it is essentially locked. The IJ-70s use an extremely strong spring to hold the breech shut during firing. They do not use a lock breech.

Sig 229 elite stainless in .40 with 155 gold dot sitting on the nightstand chambered, decocked, amounting to 14+1, with an extra mag sitting next to it. The weapon sits under a magazine so it can be reached from the side, but not seen from a standing position.

Next to that is a fenix LD10, a watch that glows well, a waterbottle, and keys. Cell phone is charging on the floor next to the bed.

On wife's side, she keeps a Sig 228 in her nightstand with a 15-round mag loaded with 124 +p gold dot, not chambered. She likes to be able to rack the slide, which she can do quickly and effectively (we've practiced with snap caps, lying down, hunkered down by bed, etc...) and have the weapon already be in SA mode.

When we feel the need, out of the safe we draw the long guns. A Remington 870 with an 18" barrel and a 6 round mag capacity sits between my wife's nightstand and the bed with four rounds of #1 buck and 2 slugs, nothing in chamber, safety off; and on my side rests an ar10 carbine with a red dot and a 20 round mag loaded with 110 grain TAP and 125 grain nostler b-tip, with a few mags on standby with 150 grain bonded, 130 grain barnes tipped x, and 180 gran MRX, chambered and with safety on.

I also believe it doesn't matter where you live, inasmuch as it doesn't protect you entirely, though some places may increase your chances.

I have a black lab that will lick anybody to death that wanders around the house at night. If that's not scary enough I also have two fat cats that will meow at anybody they see since this might irritate the person into feeding them. I've also got a skinny chihuahua under the sheets with me and the wife. My wife will probably be the most scary since she will be pissed over some jerk coming and disturbing her sleep.:cuss: If none of that is enough to stop a BG, I got a Springfield Government 1911 with Truglo TFO's as well as a Lasermax Guide Rod, loaded with 8 rounds of Winchester Ranger T's secured by my bed holster made by Ray's Holsters. My wife has a Kimber Eclipse Ultra II on her nightstand with Truglo TFO's and Crimson Trace lasergrips, loaded with Federal HST's.
