Gap under and over barell

I have a brand new S&W 686 Plus. I noticed there is a gap just below the barrel and a gap just above the barrel, in the areas illustrated in the attached photo.
Is this supposed to be like this? Just a cosmetic issue? I hate to sound dumb, but the only other revolvers I have to compare this to have no underlug.

Probably won't hurt a thing but it is an example of sloppy workmanship.

Call Smith. Send them a copy of the photo. They should fix that,

I agree with JCM298.
It probably just slipped by quality control, I'm sure they'd like the chance to make it right.

I agree, send it back to smith. I'd almost bet that since that barrel is not completly threaded into the frame, it will eventually begin to unscrew when you shoot it.
