Reloading manuals indicate the 257 Roberts velocity was reduced due to weak action mausers converted to it. Does anyone have data as to what the 257 roberts velocity and bullet weights prior to the converted Mausers?
Thanks, Byron

I think a concern was that people feared old 7x57 Remington Rolling Blocks would get rebarrelled for the Roberts, since the 7x75 is the parent case for it. I'm no expert on bolt action Mausers, but I think most of them, except for the oldest, would be fine for full tilt loads.

Look up loads for "+P .257 Roberts", and you'll have an idea of what is possible, in a strong action. All Caveats apply, of course, on working handloads properly.

Tex, thanks for the reply. I have loaded and hunted with this cartridge in my Ruger 77 for years but always wondered what the original loading was prior to the weakened loads. Byron

www.alliantpowder.com will have it. For heavier bullets on deer, I'd give Reloader 22 a try.:)

Byron,

What kind of accuracy are you getting?

I have used IMR 4831 for years. My bullet is the Hornady 117 gr BT. With factory equilivent velocity, I get 2 1/2" but increase the velocity and I have got 1 1/2". My max load is over any manuals and was carefully worked up. I would hesitate to give the charge but have used Speer 10 and Horndy 3 as my guides and studying the "improved". I have no extraction problems and no pressure signs on the primer or any other signs that these manuals gave. Byron
