Forgive me if this has been answered. I have Red Dot powder, 9mm hornaday xtp. I would like to use the Red Dot, however, I've searched for starting and max charges with no avail. Does anyone have any info/charts.

Thanks for your patience

Speer #13 gives no data for Red Dot and 124 Gr 9MM bullets. Alliant gives 4.6 max for 124 Gr FMJ in some old data I have, but I see none on their website (http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/index.aspx) now. Hmm.... ;)

I don't think Red Dot is a good choice for 9MM. It's too fast, and kind of "peaky" when pressure gets up there. Another .1 Gr can be a big difference at high pressures.

700X, AA #5, Unique, Universal Clays, N330, N340, W-231, & HS 6, are all much better choices. What other powders do you have on hand.

Red Dot is used to some extent with cast bullet 9mm loads.

Not a good choice for jacketed bullets because of the ease pressure spikes can occur at 9mm JHP operating pressure.

If you must use it, Hornady #4 listed 3.8 grains Starting - 4.2 MAX with the 124 grain jacketed bullets of the time. (NOT XTP though)

But velocity was lower then almost any other of the 11 powders listed as usable.

Here's a link to the older data from Alliant on a saved HTML page 9mm luger.htm (http://members.cox.net/scollins15/transfers_public/9mm luger.htm). My Sierra manual concurs with the max load listed in the Alliant data for their 125gr FMJ and lists 3.7gr of Red Dot as the start level for 1,000 fps. Note the Alliant data for the 125gr bullet is higher than with the 115gr bullet so work up your loads as Red Dot is a very fast powder and a 1/10gr will change pressure quite a bit. I've used Red Dot with 115gr bullets and a 4.2gr load gave me 1,134 fps from a Beretta 92F

While Red Dot doesn't maximize velocity its a good economical powder and works well in the 9mm loads.
