Shot size

Is there a difference between shot and pellet in shotgun ammo terminology?
Is there a chart somewhere that gives relevant decimal equivalent to shot size that I could look at??
I got some number 6 shot but I was amazed at how tiny the shot bb's were.
Any pointer to a shot or pellet chart would be greatly appreciated by this shotgun newbie.

The number 17 minus shot size = dia. in inches.
for example, for #6 shot: 17-6=.11, #5 is 17-5 = .12 and so on
Then when you get to shot size BB you add to 17
BB 17 +1 = .18
BBB 17 +2 =.19
T= 17+ 3 = .20
Buckshot:
#4 = .24
#3 = .25
#1 = .30
0=.32
00=.33
000=.36
