357Mag Rifles.. Recoil?

For example, like a Marlin lever action rifle... Even with 357Mag's, is there any recoil? I've yet to try shooting 357's from a rifle, but I seem to recall there's almost no recoil in my friend's 6" Python, and so I can't only imagine a 21" rifle not having any recoil at all..

Anybody give me a subjective view?

In my wife's M94, PMC 158 grainers feel very mild, about like a .22.

I haven't tried anything heavier yet.

My Browning 92 has more than you might think - the curved metal buttplate might have something to do with that. But, it's certainly not bad by any means. It's a little startling to shoot a full-power round, and an then one loaded down to .38 Special specs - pretty big difference.

Great gun
Not much recoil even with full house loads.

125grainer hots?

The 125Grainers always felt the hottest in my hands..

357Mags compared to 38's is like a Corvette and a Pinto...

My hot loads thru the Win 94 do have some recoil .. oh yes .. but far from uncomfortable.... sorta similar to .223 thru the Mini.

That's using 14 grns Vit N-110 behind gas checked Lyman cast 158 swc.

I'd equate .357Mag from a rifle to .223, and .38spcl from a rifle to .22lr.

Recoil in my Marlin 1894C with PMC 158 grain JSP's is quite mild.

Sodapop How hot were the loads I shot out of y our gun?

I was using 6.5 gr of 231 with 158 gr LSWC's, would run about 1100FPS in a 6" revolver

I shot some 158 gr xtp flat points over 14 gr of 2400 the other day that I had and they were like a pussy cat compared to my 243 in my Handi rifle.

i love my 1894 marlin .357 :D its such a sweet little gun, and eats the same food as my fave revolvers. recoil isn't much worse than a healthy beer burp either. its my idea of the perfect pistol cal. rifle, cheap ammo, nice healthy punch to it for anything within iron-sight range (your milage may vary there). so, to answer your question, no, really VERY LITTLE recoil with said rifle. if the amount of recoil it throws is still an issue, i recomend a better buttplate.

I put 65 rounds of assorted .357 magnum ammo and another 10 rounds of .38 Special through my Marlin 1894C today.

With regular .38 ammo, it does indeed remind me of a big .22, a bit louder perhaps, but not much recoil. (I haven't tried it yet, but I'd bet that some of those .38 "Cowboy" loads would be even milder.) With full-power .357 hunting ammo (WIN 180 Partition Gold & REM 165 Core Lock) the recoil is increased a couple of notches, but hardly painful.

That's why I bought this .357 carbine; after my kids develope good basic shooting skills with a .22, I'll transition them to centerfires using .38's in this gun, then .357's, and eventually on to .30-30's, etc.

In the meantime, it's great fun for me, and I plan to kill a deer with it,
and did I mention that it carries like a watchman's baton!

A 16" barrel coupled with a 125 grain gold dot on top of a full case of W296 and a magnum primer equals a very healthy fireball, but not a lot of recoil.

Have a winchester 94 Legacy in .357. No recoil in full loads and in .38 wadcutters it shoots quieter than any .22 , IMHO.
