not sure where to put this but this is good news for you New Yorkers:

got this from the Newsday online edition:

" Rep. Carolyn McCarthy said Thursday Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand's gun control views make her unacceptable for the U.S. Senate and threatened a primary challenge in 2010 if Gov. David A. Paterson selects the Hudson Democrat to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton.

McCarthy, who became a prominent gun-control advocate after her husband died and her son was injured in the 1993 massacre at the Long Island Rail Road's Merillon Avenue station that killed six people and injured 19 others, said she is "furious" about reports that Paterson today may select Gillibrand, who last year earned an "A" grade from the National Rifle Association.

"I've spent 15 years trying to prevent gun violence in this country, and if he does pick her and if no one goes and primaries her, I will primary her," McCarthy said. "I will do that. I'm not going to give up on this. I'm not going to let New York State get represented by someone who gets a 100 percent rating from the NRA."

Sen. Charles Schumer, who like McCarthy is a strong proponent of gun control, asked the Mineola Democrat to refrain from protesting Gillibrand's selection, McCarthy said."

so any NY folks out there, start getting on the phones and emails and make sure to support Ms. Gillibrand

My understanding is that the governor's appointment would hold the office until 2010, when a special election would be held.

Kirsten Gillibrand, according to the news I have read, is fiscally responsible and actually voted against the Wall Street bailout. She is also, as mentioned, NRA rated A. She is from upstate New York and represents a relatively more rural area.

I love this; Hillary Clinton and Carolyn McCarthy are so mad and there is nothing they can do. I suspect they would have rather seen another socialist with communist ideals get the seat.

Hopefully the people in upstate New York and enough people in New York City can help Ms. Gillibrand keep her seat in 2010.

If anything positive could come from Hillary moving up this is it.

Right now we just have an FYI thread with some beginnings of a plan of action, let's get a real plan established so we can get something accomplished with this.

It should focus on NY members and those of surrounding states.

Who are the people that can influence Gillibrand's selection, beside the Governor?

I have grown to respect and not just pity New Yorkers since my recent trip to the north country. They are an example the rest of us could well learn from as we wrestle with growing population centers in the west like Denver.
The people and culture I saw Up State could fit into any rural setting in America and are the victims of big city liberals dictating law for all.

Thank God they got a decent pick out of the Hillary fiasco and maybe there will be some sunshine to come of it.

You New York Patriots keep us informed of the good Pro Gun Polititians and let us know what we can do to help come election time, my money will never again simply go to a party but will be given to those from any party who stand for freedom.

I'm glad to see upstate to receive better representation, as most senators in recent memory have been from NYC or within 100 miles.

Up state NY has had a void in representation for many years. Hillary (not to get political) campaigned in 2000 up state where I have relatives and she promised to create tens of thousands of jobs and theirs been a loss of double the jobs as a result.

Would it be a good or bad thing if folks from other states wrote the NY governor?

NY senators will have the voting power to effect you in KY, so I see no reason not to contribute your support.

For better or worst here is the email I sent:
I would like to express my support for the Governors selection for Clinton's replacement.

Proper and fair representation for NY state will be had through Kirsten Gillibrand in the senate.

The senate representation for NY has been overly represented by NYC and it imitate area, as a result upstate NY has not benefited at the same pace.

Again Governor Patterson should consider me a supporter for his choose for the vacant senate seat. Thank you.

As an upstate New Yorker, this is the first thing that I don't hate Patterson for.

At first I was upset that Hillary got the Sec. of State nod, but then I realized that it not only gets her out of my state, but it might even get her out of the country for the duration. And that her replacement is pro-2nd just fills me with joy.

NY sportsmen still have their job cut out for them with Patterson's budget, but it's nice to have a glimmer of hope every once and a while.

Edited to add:
emailed Patterson thanking him for the representation and to whine about the budget

I too am jumping for joy in my NYC office. The looks on people's face when I told them "I'm more excited by this than Obama", are priceless.

I too thanked him

It can't hurt to compliment the Governor on selecting someone that represents the rest of the state and it's more traditional values.

I will donate money directly to Gillibrand's fund-raiser effort. Member "sernv99" reported:
Rep. Carolyn McCarthy said Thursday Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand's gun control views make her unacceptable for the U.S. Senate and threatened a primary challenge in 2010

Also keep in mind that the Senate muckity-mucks still have to "seat" Gillibrand in the Senate, and she may face oppposition (likely trumped-up, just like against IL Gov. Blogoiovich's appointment to fill Obama's vacant Senate seat) that might require her to hire lawyers RIGHT NOW. My money can go for that, too.

As "X-Rap" says:
You New York Patriots keep us informed of the good Pro Gun Polititians and let us know what we can do to help come election time; my money will never again simply go to a party but will be given to those from any party who stand for freedom.

I will do as X-Rap says.

I will also write to Gov. Patterson, using the link others have provided, to thank and congratulate him.

Be sure to keep the notes brief and positive supporting Rep. Gillibrand's selection as representing the entire state of NY's interests and the wisdom of putting an up-stater in the office.

Dominus, excellent idea for action. Email sent to Governor Patterson:

Governor Patterson --

Although I am currently an Oregon resident, I grew up in upstate New York and my family still resides there. I just wanted to let you know that I am delighted with your choice of Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the NY Senate seat. In addition to her strong integrity and good constituent relations, I believe that pragmatic Democrats like her are the future of our party. Especially, I applaud her strong support of the 2nd Amendment.

I am tired of the GOP beating up on us over this issue, as in the 1996 midterm elections. 2nd Amendment rights are for *all* Americans, and we Democrats should embrace this heritage and move on.

Sincerely,
<tradja>

Gillibrand was on the Nat'l news today. She did say that she would support McCarthys new bill on "Back Ground" checks. I don't know what that means?
I don't think it could be good knowing McCarthys past on gun control.

I think it's about requiring gun store owners to do NICS checks of all their employees. That's the last McCarthy legislation on background checks that I've heard of.

Maybe I'm too optimistic, but I saw that as Gillibrand's way of saying "You can stick your AWB where the sun don't shine."
