A friend came across a Savage Mk2 .22 rifle. It is missing the bolt.
Does anyone have a source for a replacement bolt? He called Savage and they said he could send it in and they would replace it for about $89.00.

Thanks,
Jim

That sounds like the best plan.

It needs to be fitted and headspaced, and safety tested.

Even if you could buy a used bolt, it might not be right.

Let Savage do it and consider it money well spent.

I might caution you that rifles with missing bolts are sometimes stolen rifles.

Thanks. I haven't had to try replacing a bolt on a .22 and didn't think about headsapce.
I also hadn't heard about a rifle missing a bolt being possibly stolen. Why does that mean that it might be stolen?

Lots of folks store bolt-guns with the bolts removed for child-safety reasons, etc.

I have a good friend / advanced collector, who lost a complete gun safe a few years ago, full of Ruger rifles with serial #1 thru 9, and early Kimber custom rifles with very low serial numbers.

He still has all the bolts, which were in another safe they didn't get.
And some low-life scumbag has his very valuable collection of now pretty worthless rifles.

It doesn't automatically mean the gun is stolen.
But it always makes me wonder how a modern rifle got separated from it's bolt in the first place.

That makes sense. I keep all of my weapons in a locked safe. I never thought about removing the bolts.
We wondered about the missing bolt also.
I let him know about the possibility of it being stolen and about needing to send it in.

Thanks,
Jim
