I am a lefty researching a good carry gun. Obviously I'd prefer something that is more lefty-friendly. There are the guns with almost no "handedness," like the Seecamp or Rohrbaugh, and then there are the ones made with lefties in mind, like the S&W M&P.

Can you help me out by listing handguns with ambidextrous or reversible slide-releases, safeties and mag releases, or any "left hand" production models? I especially want to find compact options. Thanks in advance!

XD series is fully amidextrous.

I own and sometimees carrry a Springfield Loaded 1911. It's got ambi safety and I use my trigger finger to press the mag release. Of course it's not very compact.

For compacter I carry a Kel Tec P11 in 9mm. No safety (except long DAO trigger), and again, I use my trigger finger to press mag release.

There are others Im sure, but that's the combo that works for me.

Also, any small revolver would work well in either hand, if you want to go that route.

The M&P really is the way to go. 370+ LE agencies in the past two years can't be wrong.

Yeah, so far I'm thinking M&P 40c. As far as revolvers, the only lefty model I've ever seen is the Charter Arms one. Are there any others out there? No left handed J-frame, right? That would be too good to be true.

I shoot my revolver just fine, holding it with both hands, left hand on the trigger. After the last shot I use my right hand thumb to release the cyliner.

Guess ya'll are right - that aint left handed, but it aint hard for a lefty either.

Maybe it depends on how strongly lefty (or unstrong righty) one is. I am left hand, left eye dominant but still do things like crank a fishing reel with my right hand. It's what I learned at age 5 or so and now can hardly do it lefty, even though I'm left handed. But shooting - I can't do it righty at all.

Does LEM just mean DAO?

"LEM" is DAO, but it has a shorter, easier pull than the typical DAO.

not a great carry gun but a smith and wesson 4006 has ambi-stuff. i am a left also so finding one with the decocker was nice. good luck with your search. also try kel-tec, not much to them to be ambidextrous but nice little gun for the price.

I'm a lefty with a CC permit, and I've been happy with my choices. At various times I carry/have carried a P32, 1911A1 and BHP with ambis, and a Makarov with one up-the-pipe and safety off.

HK P2000 is fully ambidextious. It has an ambi slide stop and ambi mag release. Mine is great for carrying. I carry my XD-40 subcompact more often b/c it's smaller and that is very lefty friendly as well. It has an ambi mag release which is really all i need since I slingshot the slide anyways. My 1911 has a ambi safety but I havent carried it yet since I don't have a good holster for it yet.

I was just looking at the K100 sold now in the US as the STI GP6. It's 100% fully ambidextrous. Even the mag release is fully ambi without the need to switch anything around.

Looking at it a different way, most guns are lefty neutral*, and only a few are outright lefty hostile.

Of those that are lefty hostile, the common denominator is an exclusively right handed slide safety, which is impossible to operate while holding the pistol in a master grip.

Examples:

1911 (sans ambisafety)
Walther PPK (and clones)
Older S&W autoloaders

As a lefty, I find the right handed mag releases no problem because I can actuate them quickly with my trigger finger. Right handed slide releases are no problem unless they are set too far back like on the XD, and SiGs. As far as manual safeties, an ambi is a must.

For autos, I find the M&P,Berettas, and Glocks as no problem for us lefties. Double action revolvers are no problem at all for us either. Single action revolvers seem to be made for us.

I don't think Taurus makes a lefty revolver. Actually the only one I'm sure of is Charter Arms.
They have 2, This One (http://www.charterfirearms.com/products/Charter_Southpaw_93820.html) and This Pink One (http://www.charterfirearms.com/products/Charter_PinkLadyLH_93830.html).

With all the Southpaws out there you would think the big companies would have at least a few models.

Seem to recall reading a couple years ago that a manufacturer had done some research, and concluded that Sam Colt had been a lefty. And offered an SAA style pistol with the loading gate on the other side...

The Walther P88 and P88C are true ambidextrous handguns. Pricey and not always easy to find, it's true -- but they are ambidextrous.

Bought my lefty son a Ruger SR9. Nice little pistol with a mag release and manual safety on both sides of the gun.

I carry an XD40sc and have no trouble with my 1911 with an ambi safety. I find Sigs to be quality weapons and I completed a Farnum defensive pistol class with one .... but honestly I find the decocker to be a genuine p.i.t.a. when I shoot strong side. I think my single action Blackhawk works better being left handed as I just thumb the gate open and load it with my right hand thereby keeping the revolver in my better shooting hand at all times.
