I like the Colt 1911 style as much as anybody, but... I always liked the FBI 10mm, even though it crashed and burned.

The FBIs disuse of the Smith & Wesson 1076 gave me the opportunity to finally pick up one for a song; this version is the exact same as the civilian model except that this model will fire with the magazine removed; and says so on the right side of the slide. I guess the FBI didn't want their agents to be completely disarmed if they lost all their magazines.

No manual safety, a decocker alá Sig, straight backtsrap and Trijicon night sights. Still think it's pretty cool.

I wondered how long it would take before someone posted a Bren Ten. Figures it would be Nordic.

I miss the Bren Ten:(

Got to hold a few a couple years ago. Never got to actually shoot one. I wish someone would pick up the tooling and make them again.

I've shot a Bren Ten a couple of times. Really nice, soft shooter. Very mild recoil, even taking the size & weight of the gun into account.

I love the 10mm, I have a Colt, Delta 10mm ser# DEL014X. I had EGW do a reliability job, beaver tail, commander hammer, trigger job. The next mod is to install Novak Low profiles night sites, then a nice new finnish. Not sure which one yet, but NP3 is leading.

Next project is to have a 10mm barrel fitted to my Para P16.40. Nothing like having 17 10mm's on hand.

I shoot my Colt in IDPA, have no problems knocking over steel.

Nordic: how's the BrenTen shoot in comparison to the S&W? BTW, how many of those elusive hard to get magazines do you have for the BrenTen?
Yours must be the oldest 10mm here at the board. Mine may be second as I don't have finger grooves on my G20.

NordicG3K
October 3, 2003, 06:41 PM
The Bren is a real soft shooting 10mm. The grip isn't quite as wide as the G20 and obviously doesn't flex, but it does have the weight that the Glock lacks. It just feels real good in your hand. I've got six mags (two per gun), but would like to pick up more. They actually aren't as difficult to find as you would think, but they are expensive being in the $125 range.

How many rounds does the BrenTen hold? Are they the "Holy Grail" of 10mm guns? If you could only choose between the S&W and the BrenTen, which would you choose and why?

***whew***

Thanks :D

The Bren mag holds ten rounds (a lot of books that discuss the Bren Ten quote 11 or 12 rounds, but that's incorrect). From a collecting standpoint the Bren Ten wins hands down. It's an excellent design and just a beautiful gun. There were, however, various "teething" problems that due to the company's short lifespan were never fully worked out. So, even though it pains me to say so, if I had to choose between the two and it was going to be a daily shooter I would pick the S&W 10xx series without hesitation. The S&W 10mm pistols are, in my opinion, some of the most underrated guns out there. They are more than strong enough and very reliable, and on top of that they are still resonably priced considering they haven't been produced for almost ten years now. My current CCW gun is a S&W 1086 and I have every confidence in it.

mark123

I'm not much for collecting so I'd have to go with the daily shooter. So the different S&W models are 1006, 1026, 1046, 1066, 1076 and 1086 (the 610 doesn't interest me).

Here is what I've gathered so far about the S&W 10mm offerings:

1006 and 1066 have decockers built into the slide mounted safety lever (decocks as you move the safety to the "safe" position).

1026 and 1076 have SIG-like decockers (in the frame not on the slide). 1026 has a 5" barrel and 1076 has 4.25".

1046 and 1086 are DAO (5" and 4.25" respectively).

Do I have that all right?

I think the 1026 or the 1046 appeal to me the most. How are the DAO triggers?

Are they all double stack?

Nordic's right about the S&W 10XX-series guns being robust.

They were built like tanks in order to handle stout 10mm loads, back in the day when 95% of these loads were still at or near full-strength in their respective bullet-weights. The all stainless-steel Smith 10mms, like their 45acp counterparts (e.g., 4506/4566), were intended as serious duty guns, being expected to withstand the rigors of everyday use on the street. Both my 1076 and 5" 1006 can handle the hot stuff all day long without a hitch.

BTW, the Smith 10mms all take the same single-stack 9-rd mag, giving them a 9+1 capacity. (The one with the WHITE follower is the latest in the series).

Usually the only complaint you see about S&W 10mms is that they're heavy for CCW, although the 4.25" 1076/1066/1086 are a bit more packable and concealable. (The key for OWB carry, unless you use a shoulder holster, is a quality rig combined with a real gun belt, not an ordinary dress belt).

Nordic's also right about the price. I still see minty Smith 10mms coming up for sale at reasonable prices, so they're not that scarce - yet. And S&W still has parts, barrels and magazines/components for the 10XX-series.

HTH. :)

Another one that has been worked over by Ted Yost.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0603/Bob8251/100_1051.jpg

I have to get some new grips, I haven't been fond of these VZ linen micarta since day 1.

One thing I had Ted do was to minimize the beavertail. I hate those big swoopy beavertails, so I had him take the humps off the grip safety and grind down the beavertail.
