Oleg -- Poster Idea!

Oleg -- Every time I see the left and the media fall all over the United Nations and Kofi Annan, I wonder "who voted for this guy"?
How about a poster along the lines of "Did you vote for Kofi Annan?"
I picture some 3rd world dictator -- maybe surrounded by bodyguards -- raising his hand.
Suggested copy:
Print at top:
"Some people want us to rely on the United Nations to protect the USA and worldwide democracy."
Big print in the middle:
"Raise your hand if you voted for Kofi Annan".
Small print at bottom:
"-Of the UN's 180 member countries, only 40 are democratic nations that meet the UN's own "Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
-All U.N. officials are appointed, not elected"

Good idea! I know I didn't vote for him or any other part of the United Nations.

Well, I don't like it.
Folks, we've got an issue. Let's stick to it. And leave the tinfoil hats at home.

Tinfoil hats or not, the UN has interest in our issue.
I probably should have put this in L&P as it's not directly gun related.
"Some progress is already being made as States [nations] tighten their arms export legislation and collect and destroy surplus weapons."
- UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in his 2000 report to the General Assembly
"States [nations] emerging from conflicts should, as soon as practicable, impose or reimpose licensing requirements on all civilian possession of small arms and light weapons...."
- 1997 UN "Panel of Governmental Experts on Small Arms" report

Gee thanks Bogie...I get it now.
Anybody that thinks the UN is an anti american anti-gun organization wears tin foil hats.
Dude...you had better wake up and start paying attention.

Ummmm, I see this as directly firearms-related. The UN has made several fairly bold attempts to pass worldwide restrictions on small arms. Remember the UN council on Small Arms right after the year 2000 election debacle finished? The UN really wanted some teeth in a resolution. The US delegate kept vetoing. The end result was something pretty mild, like "abhorring the illegal use of mall arms" or something like that.
I shudder to think what might have happed had a more "anti" US administration been in power. I'll bet the Schumers and Feisteins in the USA would love to have a UN resolution they could adopt or mirror.
If this is tinfoil hat stuff, I'm guilty of tinfoilitis.
OTOH, there was a move to "buy a gun on xxx date to protest the UN Council on Small Arms" on some gun forums. Don't remember if that included TFL. I'm proud to note that I participated.

No to hi-jack the thread but:
Dave R, what exactly does your sig mean?
I am pro-rights (on gun issues).
That kinda sounds like if it's not gun related, eg free speech, that you're not in support of that particular right?
Anyways, back to the question of the thread:
Isn't the UN also trying to pass somekind of education syllabus for member nations? I think the only hold outs are the US and UK? That's scary too. Once the young uns are taught the UN principals, it's easy to start replacing our Armed Forces and police forces with blue helmets, eh?

I am pro-rights: I believe people have the right to own and use firearms responsibly.
If it wasn't clear, maybe I need to change it.

Need a hi-res picture of the goblinoid in charge of the UN. Anyone got such a pic?

The official bio pic from the UN webpage (http://www.un.org/News/ossg/sg/pages/sg_biography.html) is kinda nice.

I suspect that this poster is going to be a best seller... Be sure to put it up here when you get it done, Oleg.

Actually, most of the UN folks are more concerned about getting guns out of the hands of the folks who seem determined to take tribal warfare and genocide, and upgrade it to 21st century levels. Frankly, if we could disarm a few of the African states, maybe the people could join the rest of the world.
I don't think that the UN is our _primary_ problem. Maybe in the future. But _right now_ we've got folks who think that anyone who owns more than a deer rifle or a duck gun is some sorta loony. THOSE are the folks who we need to concentrate our efforts on. On education. On persuasion.

bogie -- I understand your point about spending our efforts to push for our own rights here in the US, but is the inalienable right to keep and bear arms only inalienable in North America?
Also -- the point I was trying to make is that most UN member countries are run by dictators -- who naturally want to disarm their subjects. After that's done, who's next?
We are in the middle of a fight concerning whether the USA has the right to defend our interests or if we need to run to the UN when we are threatened. If we wait for the future to fight this fight, our children and grandchildren who join the military (or who are conscripted) will be taking orders from some African General to enforce 'common-sense small arms control'.
Paraphrasing Milton Friedman --
Politics and laws should be as local as possible.
If you don't like the laws in your city, move to another city.
If you don't like the laws in your state, move to another state.
If you don't like the laws in your country, move to another country.
If you don't like the laws of the one-world-government.....ummm......get over it.
