Israeli Mauser from FAC?

While looking through the FAC catalog today I found Israeli Mausers for $69. The description says "In fair condition. Missing small parts and/or cracked stock and or bulged barrel. All will have bolts. .308 caliber." From the description they sound pretty beat up and need of work, but has anyone else seen these or own one of these Mausers from FAC? Would it be better to fix one of these or get a VZ24 and rebarrel it?

I always liked the Mauser action, the look of the rifle but the fact that it would be easier to have the same ammo as my SAR-8 is really appealing.

A good friend of mine bought one awhile back. He called me up and said come on over and we'll try 'er out. I thought, a .308 Israeli conversion K98, cool! Anyway, we were shooting at a man size paper target 75 (not even 100) yards away and were lucky to even hit the plywood backing 2 out of every 5 shots. And I'm not talking about in the same general vicinity on the board, these babys were spreading like a shotgun. He's considering ordering a new medium contour barrel from F.A.C. and having it installed. :banghead:

Thanks, clint1911a1. I started reading old threads on thefiringline and they say the same thing. Most of these Israelis are shot out and groups everywhere. Was the action still good on your friend's rifle? I remember reading on this board that someone rebarreled a 98 type rifle for .308 and his groups went down to 1 moa. So for $69 it may be a good gun for a project, unless there was something else wrong with the rifle.

Are there .308 barrels available for M48 Mausers?

I bought a Israeli Mauser back when they first imported them in the late 80's. Excellent condition (metal) for $100. Can't remember where I got it. Pristine bore and receiver but the wood was horrible. It shot about 2 to 2-1/2" at 100 yards.

I sporterized it put a handcarved stock (by me) etc, etc, etc, etc. Unfortunately have about $420 in it (and 12 years of off and on work) and I finally took my first big game animal with it last year.

Not a tack driver but its my project gun. No doubt a new barrel could help.

Yes another48hrs, the action on my buddy's rifle is in fine shape. You know, rebarreling one and gettin er' down to one MOA for $69 don't sound half bad. I just might have to check into it myself.
